Have fun planning, Kris! I was really impressed with Twelve Angry Men when I participated in the group read of it this year.
I'm finally on the board 🎉 I'm going with the "slow but steady" wins the race mentality!😃I read Little House on the Prairie because I need to read On the Banks of Plum Creek for my IRL book club this month.
I read the 1st in the series a few years ago so I was prepared for different racist comments around indigineous peoples. There were multiple conversations around indians and Indian territory and how it just makes sense that they leave and let the white farmers work the land.
This was a beloved series for me when I was growing up,
I will say, this is definitely a book of its time. I don't say that as a criticism but rather as a base of where I'm coming from when reading this as an adult. It called to mind how we ingest information as children versus adults.
I would still hand it to my child but with the caveat that we read it together so we can talk through different parts of the story.
I really enjoyed my reread and still love a pioneer story. There is something about the story of people settling in an area or community that I enjoy.
Glad you were able to get started, Kris! You have several good ones on your list to look forward to! Enjoy! :)
I've finally made some more progress. Slow and steady....I need to read a bit faster but so far that hasn't been happening.O5 A Classic Book that Reminds You of Someone
Hondo|Louis L'Amour - Completed 5/16/24
What can I say...this was not a for me book. I knew that going in but chose it because it fit the prompt and my husband has a box of Louis L'Amour books upstairs in a box from when he was younger.
I found the writing very simplistic and the story, overall, had no depth🙄 Definitely reminded me of the old TV westerns. I can now say I have read Louis L'Amour.
Kris, I read a Zane Grey recently for that same reason! Now I've read that author! If it's for a challenge, then it's worth it -- otherwise, well..... ;)On to the next book!
Sometimes just saying we have read them is enough. Now we know what we "don't like" about them. Things will fall together, Kris. Lots of year left yet.
Finished Neverwhere! My first Neil Gaiman. I liked it. I listened on audio and think I may have enjoyed it more reading it physically. A solid 3⭐One step closer to Bingo 😊
Finished another one. I read Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage for N4 (a classic on or about the sea/ocean).I can't remember who I "borrowed" this option from but I had seen it on another of the bingo boards and thought I'd give it a shot. So glad I did.
A fascinating look at the survival of these men on the Antarctic expedition. It's one of those moments in history that I was aware of from a historical perspective, ie: a failed attempt - but in reality it was so much more. I had a map up as I was reading to track their route.
I'm all over the place on my bingo board but strategic, I am not.
I enjoyed Endurance, Kris Glad you did as well. No worries about being "all over the place"--good reading is the goal.
Yes, there are a lot of interesting Antarctic stories, and it's nice to have this one around to be non-tragic. I've not read it yet, but heard a lot of good things about it. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm getting a little closer to bingo! Finished Slouching Towards Bethlehem: EssaysI'm not sure that Joan Didion is the writer for me. Prior to reading this, I had read The Year of Magical Thinking and like it but didn't love it. I had the similar feeling when reading Slouching Towards Bethlehem. Arguably, a phenomenal writer but the without the context of the time period, I struggled to understand/care about the point. Some of her more personal essays resonated more.
All in all, I gave it a 3
Nice progress, Kris! I feel exactly the same about Didion. I like her writing, but she never fully connects for me.
