I love this book. I first read it in 4th grade and I have encouraged both my children to read it. My 8 year old son just finished it. All time great.

If you did start this list, I would suggest When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit for this same age group. It is a semi-autobiographical novel telling of the author's escape from Germany with her family following Hitler becoming Chancellor.

Set in Demark during World War II, this book is narrated from the point of view of Annemarie, a ten-year-old girl whose family takes in a young Jewish neighbor to pose as the family’s (now deceased) eldest daughter. It is based on the true story of the Danish resistance who assisted Jewish families in escaping to Sweden. The storyline does not contain anything too graphic. Themes include friendship, ethics, and the nature of courage. It is an excellent introduction for children to this period in history, but adults can appreciate it too.
