Travis (travishiltz) | 2433 comments The monster were there, just because we needed one and the shenanigans were trying a tiny bit too hard, but everything else, I loved.

Liking this Doctor's energy and outfit, everybody in the cast was solid and likable.
The themes about family here and in the specials are way better than when RTD did families the first time around.
Love that he is touching on ideas/themes from the Chibnall era and not just to hand wave them away.
There's thought and emotion going on there.

A fun romp that has me counting down until spring.

Pretty much everything you just said. 😸

I can say without spoilers that this is one of the most refreshing Christmas specials we've had in a very long time. I even rewatched it again yesterday just because I could. Such fun, and a lot of energy.

Joy!

Rick | 2281 comments Mavity, Mayhem, and Magic.

The new era of Doctor Who.

And now … Who do you think Mrs. Flood is?

I think River Song is too obvious. Maybe Master/Missy?

I hope not. It would be nice to get a new monster/villain/antagonist.

I looked the actress, Anita Dobson, up out of curiosity though, and discovered she was part of the cast for Eastenders and actually did a Doctor Who radio play back in the 80s-90s. I liked what we saw of her in this story and evidently, she will be back for the season!

message 6: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2281 comments Maybe they were just referencing her previous time the Doctor Who radio play. That seems far more likely.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2433 comments We know it’s not the rani
It’s never the rani

No real guesses
Very much in wait and see mode this season

Jadetyger Sevea | 73 comments Wow, I haven't been here in a while. Hi, folks!

I wasn't thrilled with the goblin plot. It was just too over the top for me. Everything else I loved. Ruby was fun without being annoying, and I enjoyed her dynamic with 15.

I really like the new Doctor. Yes, we got to see him in the Giggle, but it's the first story that makes or breaks the Doctor for me.

Ncuti Gatwa ticked all my boxes:

1. Does the Doctor hold my attention when they're on screen? Do I find the actor's performance interesting?

Yes to both.

2. Did the Doctor feel like "The Doctor" to me (Yes, I know this is subjective)?

Yes.

3. Did I like the companion?

Yes.

4. Is this a TARDIS team that I can enjoy, and watch for a season without wanting to throw something at the screen?

Based on what we've seen so far, yes.

5. Do I like the reoccurring characters, if there are any?

Yes.

So, I'm pretty happy. Like I said, I didn't care for the goblin plot, so if I watch this again, I'll probably fast forward to my favorite scenes.

Gatwa hit it out of the park, imho, and all of the important aspects of Who were there. And that's the most important thing.

Yep, me too. LOL.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2433 comments There's a great quote, wish I could remember where I heard it:

"For all it's faults, Doctor Who has never miscast the Doctor."

Whatever problems I've had with the effects budget or the writing. There's never been a Doctor where I felt 'this guy was a mistake" and Ncuti is no exception.

Travis (travishiltz) | 2433 comments My new favorite fan theory: Kameleon was played by the actor Gerald Flood, so the obvious guess is Mrs. Flood is a Kameleon robot,

I'm perfectly okay with that one.

message 13: by Travis (new)

Travis (travishiltz) | 2433 comments The other theory I love is that the figure that leaves Ruby at the church is wearing the same hooded robe Jody Whitiker wore in her first Doctor Who promos, so it's obviously the 13th Doctor.

message 14: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2281 comments And now we’re heading down Steven Moffat’s magical girl road. 🙄

Someone else came up with that idea in meme form a while back. Not sure I want to travel that road either.

Yeah, don't love yet another one of those (they must have enough to form a super hero team, at this point)
But, if it gives us an in for a multi-Doctor story featuring Jodi and Ctuti, I'm willing to let RTD get away with some stuff.

message 17: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2281 comments Jodi & Ncuti together would be AWESOME! 😸

I just want normal companions doing extraordinary things, not extraordinary companions doing miracle things.

Me too.
But, that ship may have sailed.

Well, we’d have The Moffats in Time and Space starring: River Song (Melody Malone, Melody Pond), Amelia (Amy) Pond, the Impossible Girl (Clara Oswald, Oswin Oswald, Clara Oswin Oswald), Me the Immortal, Madame de Pompadour, Bill Potts and Sally Sparrow. With Rory Williams and Larry Nightingale as the token males and comic relief. Is that enough for the team? Do we need more?

Martha Jones as their government liaison

And I'm sure Donna and Rose Noble will end up with super powers from the leftover timecard energy.

Undoubtedly.

Tony | 33 comments I really enjoyed Ncutis debut.
The story was a bit of Christmas Fluff with some intriguing elements such as the hooded figure dropping Ruby off and Mrs. Flood
The best thing was the performances from Ncuti & Millie

message 24: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2281 comments Agreed.
The goblin song got stuck in my head. I showed the clip around to my library coworkers and everyone was in horrified hysterics over it. Too much fun.

message 25: by Rick (new)

Rick | 2281 comments Watched it again this past weekend. Love Gatwa. Great energy.
