It sounds worse than it is... everything is simplified by the spreadsheet... once I make it, just bookmark your tab, and input your books throughout the year... all the math is taken care of, automatically...

The competition lasted all of 2 days, back in 2018, before a spreadsheet was invented... and things only got fancier in the next couple months/years... now I just maintain the existing spreadsheet with a new copy each year, and make minor tweaks and fulfill feature requests...

Mel | 2367 comments Chris, sorry dude, you may be able to part with yours, but Harold is coming with me.
*peevish whispers from scabbard* It's Herald! My name is Dawn's Herald!"
Shut up Harold.

Yanique, I trust you with the new company of Swords. I'm sure you will lead them well, and they shall find their own trusty, and much less peevish, blades.

*puts on shades again* Come on Chris, back in the Bookmobile, we have some Guarding to do or some shit.

Farewell Chris and Mel, enjoy the new team. Felina, I felt the exact same way in year one when there was no spreadsheet! Thank goodness one was made.

I think I did too, Tammie....My memory isn't what it used to be....

Oh my dear Silver Swords! welcome, welcome to our honorable company. Farewell to the former Swords, may your blades serve you well on your new adventures.

Happy to see the new faces on the team and I look forward to reading with you this year!

Frank | 840 comments Hello Everyone.
Been in the competition since the beginning, but never on Silver Swords, not sure how long that name has been used, as they have gone through several changes over the years?
Looking forward to a wonderful year of reading, and getting to know all of you!!
Hi Angela Jr. , I see we're together again, third year in a row.
Yanique it has been several years.
Elizabeth it has been longer.

Well, let's all enjoy.

Actually I was a Blood Eagle in 2021, I forgot.

Thanks Tammie for the reminder.
It seems the powers that be, move me from team to team each year. LOL.

How are you all doing with your first reads of 2024?

message 34: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1743 comments I completed my second one today.

Now I am trying to decide between the titles I know my daughter is not interested in reading with me: Two for the Dough, The Color of Magic, Barrayar, or Yellowface. I'm leaning towards the last one.

Barrayar is a buddy read later this month! So you'll have company for sure.

message 36: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2505 comments Doing good. I’ve read three so far. I need to update the spreadsheet.

message 37: by Tammie (last edited Jan 04, 2024 09:19PM) (new)

Tammie | 6032 comments I'm still working on the first one because I'm visiting with family until Monday and don't have a lot of reading time.

message 38: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1743 comments So January was brutal! I knew I was overcommitting, but I just could not help myself.

I've dropped out of Discworld, which makes me sad because I've wanted to read it for years, but after three attempts at rereading The Color of Magic, I knew I wasn't getting into it this time.

I have also dropped out of The Hurricane Wars.

I'm focussing on catching up with The Iron Druid (I think I'm two or three books behind) I'll be starting Hunted; Stephanie Plum - I am currently reading Four to Score; and Alex Verus - I'll be reading Veiled. Unfortunately, this may put me behind with Gunnie Rose ( A Longer Fall) too.

message 39: by Felina (last edited Feb 02, 2024 05:16AM) (new)

Felina | 2505 comments Me too, Nyssa. I’ve dropped out of a few things. I’m behind on Discworld and Vorkosigan but I’m going to be fighting to not have to drop out of them. There are just too many awesome books on the schedule! I also dropped out of Hurricane Wars. At this point I am only going to do the series I’m already deep in like Verus and the stuff that I put together for a BR. And even then I’m a little over booked. 😬

message 40: by Frank (new)

Frank | 840 comments There are so many BR's out there, that sometimes I don't know which to chose.
Many are of series that I have started sometime ago and have never finished, Vorkosigan for one. I don't have time to go back and reread so I tell myself I'll read them at another time.

I think this year it seems everyone came out of the gate strong. I will try to keep up with my choices.

Good luck to all.

message 41: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 1743 comments Good Luck to you as well!

I’m having second thoughts about Stephanie Plum; I’m not enjoying it as much as others in the group. I like the side characters more than Stephanie.

I’m also still feeling bummed about Discworld, but I don’t think I can catch up. If it’s open like In Death, I might give it another go later *shrug*.

I’m currently reading Veiled for this group and Burn for Me (for another group); I think the series will be read here at a later date ( both groups are doing an Ilona Andrews readathon).

message 42: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2505 comments Yeah, I can’t keep up with the two a month for Discworld. I’m going to shoot for one a month and just jump in the threads very late. Ha ha.

You can/could use one of the alternate reading orders, where you just follow certain sub-series like Witches or Death, and skip over Rincewind, etc... Mel posted an image somewhere...

And I understand exactly what you mean about Stephanie Plum... in 2014, I binged the first 45ish In Death books in 3 months, then in December/January I tried Stephanie Plum, and abandoned after 4 books for the same reasons you mention with TSTL heroine, lack of character development, etc...

Main thing keeping me going this time is the group aspect...

Yanique Gillana | 3236 comments Mod
Don't feel pressured to keep up with everything. If you're not feeling it then do what's best for your reading.

I dropped out of Vorkosigan myself. I was considering Disc World, but I tried Wyrd Sisters and it was just ok for me so I decided not to read anymore.

I'm considering dropping Stephanie Plum...

message 47: by Felina (new)

Felina | 2505 comments You maybe should. I liked Plum the whole time so if you don’t like it now, I don’t think it changes much from what you’re already reading.

I've officially dropped it... 2nd time... made it 2 books further this time... guess it's back in the abandoned pile...

Also makes me February a bit more manageable...
