I don't have many warm fuzzies for Sam either. She is so abrasive at times that she turns me off. I keep hoping that as I get farther into the series that I find something that makes me like her character. There has to be something, after all there are over a dozen books. Someone must like her.
Anita, I think it is a case that people either like her or they don't. In that way it is like Eve. However, for me, Sam didn't have all of the childhood trauma that made Eve distrustful of people until Roarke.
I found her irksome in the beginning. Over time, things happen that had me begin to like her. Hope you can hang in there long enough to see if that happens for you, too.
Like you all, I am hoping that something happens to make me change my mind about her. It needs to happen sooner rather than later. Regarding Eve, I always liked her. Even at her most prickly, she is not manipulative or selfish like Sam. With Eve, what you see is what you get and there is an inherent honesty in her that is lacking in Sam.
I think my problem with Sam goes back to that prequel and the first book. I felt for Sam and Nick in the prequel and was disappointed to learn what happened to them in the first book. The whole just walking away from each other and letting Peter manipulate them just never felt right to me.

She is strong, loving, and trying to get all her "marriage rules" in place even when she forgets. She tries.
Anita wrote: "The whole just walking away from each other and letting Peter manipulate them just never felt right to me..."I agree Anita; it didn't work for me either. However, my biggest problem with Sam is that she doesn't even try to put Nick first.
Jonetta I will give her a few more books. I enjoy our discussions too much to stop.

In the aftermath of a tragic loss, they struggle to reconnect as the big day draws near and their work keeps pulling them apart. When a new clue in a cold case surfaces, Nick asks Sam not to take any foolish chances before the wedding and to leave it alone for the time being. Sam agrees, but she can’t let it go entirely and winds up trapped in an explosive situation. Then an unwelcome visitor from her past threatens her future happiness. With trouble at every turn, will Sam survive long enough to walk down the aisle?
