Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Fun!

In 2024, perhaps I will finally read The Immortalists.
(this is the book that has been on my tbr longest I think)

My biggest regret this year is I wasted time reading ... nothing, no regrets!. I am most proud of finishing The Sympathizer - for the 2nd time.

My most ambitious reading resolution this year is to nothing too ambitious, just read and enjoy.

Next year, I really hope to read 55 books. But in reality, I'll probably only read 55!

At this point in time, my favorite genre is historical fiction and my favorite author is Marlon James.

My least favorite genre is self-help.

If I hear anymore about Colleen Hoover books, I don't think I will be able to take it.
(this is more sick of hearing about people who DON'T like Hoover. I don't wanna hear anymore about how much people think Hoover is overrated)

The book I read this year with which I most disagreed with the general reading population was ??... can't think of anything.

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year I would love for it to be something spooky! But with my luck it would end up being something too niche.

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is to read anything you want to your heart's content.

And if people would just listen to me, everyone here would read whatever you want in 2024.

At this point in time, my favorite genre is Epic Fantasy and my favorite author is Robin Hobb

My least favorite genre is Literary Fiction

If I hear anymore about the anticipated 2024 books, I don't think I will be able to take it.

Booknblues | 12209 comments In 2024, perhaps I will finally readThe Death of Ivan Ilych Anna Karenina,The Old Man And The Seaor any number of books.

My biggest regret this year is I wasted time reading Five Quarters of the Orange until I threw in on the DNF pile. I am most proud of finishing The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History.

My most ambitious reading resolution this year is to just read like whatever I feel like.

The one book I'm absolutely can't wait to read this year is the one I just started, Let Us Descend.

Next year, I really hope to read 90 books. But in reality, I might read more.

At this point in time, my favorite genre is literary fiction, historical fiction, mystery, slow travel and I don't have a favorite author.

My least favorite genre is anything I find boring or too difficult to read. While I want to learn when I read and love something inventive and creative, I don't want to struggle or read something too weird or creepy.

If I hear anymore about (I am going to agree with Meli) and say Colleen Hoover, I don't think I will be able to take it.

The book I read this year with which I most disagreed with the general reading population was Five Quarters of the Orange.

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year I would love for it to be mystery. But with my luck it would end up being fantasy.

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is to be healthy, happy and have a great reading year.

And if people would just listen to me, everyone here would read The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store in 2024.

So interesting! When I complete this little activity, you will see that one of my reading goals is to read all the Booker Prize winners. If I go backwards to the first winner I have not yet read, the book is by Marlon James! I am heartened to hear he is your favorite!! Have you read A Brief History of Seven Killings? My only fear is some people characterize it as very "hard" to read.

Next year, I really hope to read 160 books. But in reality, I'll probably read more.

If I hear anymore about Fredrik Backman, I don't think I will be able to take it.

The book I read this year with which I most disagreed with the general reading population was Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books and The Guest List

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year I would love for it to be historical romance. But with my luck it would end up being christian lit.

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is a year of great fun reading.

My biggest regret this year is I wasted time reading The Diamond Eye. I am most proud of finishing King: A Life.

My most ambitious reading resolution this year is to read as many Booker Prize winners as I can with a goal of someday finishing them all.

The one book I'm absolutely can't wait to read this year is The Best Minds: A Story of Friendship, Madness, and the Tragedy of Good Intentions.

Next year, I really hope to read 60 number of books. But in reality, I'll probably only read 50.

My least favorite genre is fantasy.

If I hear anymore about Remarkably Bright Creatures, I don't think I will be able to take it.

The book I read this year with which I most disagreed with the general reading population was Demon Copperhead.

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year I would love for it to be true crime. But with my luck it would end up being paranormal romance.

I want you to read Walking to Samarkand, and I'll join in the conversation. I really want to read Winds of the Steppe: Walking the Great Silk Road from Central Asia to China

Joy D | 10257 comments In 2024, perhaps I will finally read The Woman in White.

My biggest regret this year is I wasted time reading Carry Me Down (hated it). I am most proud of finishing Bleak House (all 1017 pages of a book I've wanted to read for a long time).

My most ambitious reading resolution this year is not to feel obligated to finish books I'm not enjoying (I'm getting better at it but it's still a challenge for me - always the optimist, I keep thinking it will improve).

The one book I absolutely can't wait to read this year is Mobility.

Next year, I really hope to read 300 books. But in reality, I'll probably read more.

At this point in time, my favorite genre is literary fiction (with science fiction, non-fiction, and historical fiction all close behind) and my favorite authors are too many to list.

My least favorite genre is Thriller with Romance in close contention.

If I hear anymore about Fourth Wing, I don't think I will be able to take it. (This is not my kind of book and I won't be reading it).

The book I read this year with which I most disagreed with the general reading population was The Bee Sting (so many of my friends loved it but it did not work at all for me). Another one is: Hello Beautiful, which everyone but me seems to love.

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year I would love for it to be non-fiction or journeys. But with my luck it would end up being horror or paranormal.

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is to read what you love and love what you read!

And if people would just listen to me, everyone here would read Vintage Contemporaries or Wellness in 2024. (These are books I think lots of people would enjoy).

Amy | 12982 comments In 2024, I am actually starting Covenant of Water in Two Weeks, and in two Days.... (Wait for It.... Lynne?) I am going to start the 61 hour audio of A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander #6).

I have more than a few regrettable books....
Tracy flick Can't Win
The Court Dancer
Romantic Comedy
Counterfeit
The Crimson Thread
Unfortunately there are like another 10 more that completely wasted my time, but STS helped me expunge these.

I can't wait to read:
Echo of the Old Books, The Phoenix Crown, and am starting also this week, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store

I hope to read 120 books and I will probably read between 120-130

My favorite genres are historical fiction and contemporary fiction. My least favorite is fantasy. And yet I read four fantasy books this year and loved all four. It has to hit me just right. My favorite tag however, is thought-provoking. I don't personally have a tag for it, but it is my all time favorite ever tag.

I would have answered last year or 6 months ago for don't tell me yet another time, although it may have died down a little, Lessons in Chemistry, which I liked enough but thought was overrated.

I did not care for Small Things Like These as others did. The worth of that one escaped me completely. Same with Lager Queen of Minnesota. Nor Only the Beautiful. Nor The Whispers. Nor the Cellist of Sarajevo. But I am going to answer this question as having absolutely LOVED This Is Not the Time To Panic, which others did not feel as strongly about as I did.

I would love for the tag to be a fun and narrow one, something unique like we have with the racetrack. Like angels, or beach, or wine and chocolate or maps or something. But with my luck it will be non-fiction.

message 13: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12982 comments Whoops - didn't finish. My wish for all of you is to read less and live more. Not meant remotely as a judgement. Just don't forget to get out there too and live your own story.

And if I could make everyone read one book - get a load, its non-fiction.... It would be:

Israel, A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth, by Noa Tishby, who you can follow on Social Media.

A couple of others want to read it also, and I am at the point of saying screw challenges, I am starting it and setting up the buddy read! See if I don't tomorrow! I also got Steppes in ebook in a deal of the day not long ago.

Theresa, Emma is my all-time favorite Austen heroine. I tend to like reprehensible characters!

OM, I'm glad you liked my review of The Running Grave. The book I absolutely can't wait for is the sequel, since it ended with a sort of cliffhanger. Also the next book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series by C.S. Harris. The author has the whole series planned and I think there are only 1 or 2 left.

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is to have a fun year of reading.

And if people would just listen to me, everyone here would read whatever they want in 2024.

Robin P | 5871 comments I missed the part of the question that said what tag we want (I said Historical Fiction) but also "with my luck it would end up being" - Horror or the new Romantasy.

Ellen | 3535 comments In 2024, perhaps I will finally read Les Miserables (but probably not)

My biggest regret this year is I wasted time reading The Gray House
I am most proud of finishing A Prayer for Owen Meaney

My most ambitious reading resolution this year is to finish all the challenges I start

The one book I'm absolutely can't wait to read this year is The River We Remember

Next year, I really hope to read 125 books. But in reality, I'll probably read 125+

At this point in time, my favorite genre is mystery and my favorite author is William Kent Krueger, Linda Castillo and C. J. box

My least favorite genre is fantasy

If I hear anymore about any Coleen Hoover book, I don't think I will be able to take it.

The book I read this year with which I most disagreed with the general reading population was The Invisible Library

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year I would love for it to be mystery But with my luck it would end up being fantasy

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is to have the best reading year ever!

And if people would just listen to me, everyone here would read Plainsong by Kent Haruf in 2024.

Sue | 2741 comments Complete the following phrases to wrap up 2023:

In 2024, perhaps I will finally read I really don't worry too much about what I haven't read. I don't keep a physical TBR, so there's no guilt book sitting on my nightstand.

My biggest regret this year is I wasted time reading Forty-Ninth by Boris Pronsky, the most poorly written book I've read in a long time. I am most proud of finishing Ken Follet's Century Trilogy at close to 3000 pages.

My most ambitious reading resolution this year is to keep track of all the various challenges I signed up for.

The one book I'm absolutely can't wait to read this year is Table for Two: Fictions by Amor Towles.

Next year, I really hope to read 150 number of books. And in reality, I'll probably read 150.

At this point in time, my favorite genre is - I'm not sure I have a specific favorite. Maybe I'll just say I like a bunch of genres that the rest of the group seems to hate: horror, paranormal, short stories, dystopia, quirky humor, true crime, thrillers and literary fiction. I have a bunch of favorite authors.

My least favorite genres are high fantasy (regular fantasy is fine), young adult, chick lit.

If I hear anymore about Colleen Hoover, I don't think I will be able to take it. I have to go with the group on this one.

The book I read this year with which I most disagreed with the general reading population was Spare. A few of you mentioned not wanting to hear any more about it, but I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year I would love for it to be something with an X or a Z just so we can all search out those crazy books. But with my luck it would end up being high fantasy.

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is to discover books you love.

And if people would just listen to me, everyone here would read to their heart's content in 2024.

Hannah | 3352 comments In 2024, perhaps I will finally read Malena es un nombre de tango but I probably won't as I've owned this book since before I joined GR, and it's over 750 pages of tiny Spanish print.

My biggest regret this year is I wasted time reading Desperate Characters . I am most proud of finishing The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling at close to 1,000 pages.

My most ambitious reading resolution this year is to read as many books from my owned TBR as possible.

The one book I'm absolutely can't wait to read this year is The Women or The Phoenix Crown.

Next year, I really hope to read 150 books. But in reality, I'll probably read more.

At this point in time, my favorite genre is historical fiction .

My least favorite genre is horror.

If I hear anymore about another book by or about the royal family, I don't think I will be able to take it.

The books I read this year with which I most disagreed with the general reading population were Weyward, All Systems Red, Remarkably Bright Creatures and The Covenant of Water.

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year I would love for it to be historical fiction. But with my luck it would end up being something incredibly niche that I have nothing that matches on my TBR.

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is that they have fun with their reading.

And if people would just listen to me, everyone here would read books they really enjoy in 2024.

Jgrace | 3961 comments In 2024 perhaps I will finally read Demon Copperhead, or not. I've finally made peace with the fact that I will never, ever finish Anna Karenina.

My biggest regret this year is that I wasted time reading too many trivial online postings ( not PBT posting obviously!). I fell down too many rabbit holes.

I am most proud of finishing Guy Gavriel Kay's two book Sarantine Mosaic. They had been on the TBR for a very long time.

My most ambitions reading resolution this year is to write my reviews before I begin the next book. I'm already falling down on this one as I have 5 reviews left over from 2023.

I'm with Sue on this one. The book I cannot wait to read is Table for Two: Fictions.

I hope to read 80 books. I will probably read more than that, but I don't count the books that I obsessively reread.

According to the stats, my favorite genre is historical fiction. By the numbers, my favorite authors write never ending series, but I'm just as much in love with several writers who only produce one book every 3 or more years.

My least favorite genre is celebrity memoir.
If I hear anymore about Spare I don't think I'll be able to take it.

The book I read this year which I most disagreed with the general population was probably The Invisible Hour. But I'm not sure because I mostly only look at PBT opinions.

If we could read just one tag for PBT this year is would be Poetry.
( But you would all probably vote me off the island. I did that once years ago on Shelfari.) With my luck it will probably be Celebrity Memoir.

My wish for my reading friends here at PBT is for everyone to have a wonderful year full of good books and good conversation about books.

And if people would listen to me everyone here would read more poetry this year. ( I hear you all groaning.)

About poetry:
As a French & English Lit major, I read a lot of poetry and I liked a lot of the older stuff. But modern poetry I find too abstract - it's about a feeling, an impression, an emotion - there is no story and not many visuals. As a kid, I loved poetry books that had story poems, funny poems, etc. For someone with 3 college degrees (yes, and I didn't use them for a lot of my career), I have lowbrow tastes. I am the same with music. Classical musical is abstract and choir music, which my husband has sung for decades, I often find boring (they just sing the same words over and over!) I like catchy tunes, songs from musicals, something I can sing along to (even though I personally cant carry a tune.) The one contemporary poet I found I really enjoy is Amanda Gorman. She of course writes in a "popular" register with rhyme and rhythm.

JGrace - Popsugar has a poetry prompt this year - so I will be reading a volume of poetry with at least 24 poems in it. Suggestions? Note: I studied French Poetry in college and have occasionally read other poets -- but it's not a regular diet. Last was a collection of Leonard Cohen poems and accompanying illustrations.

For poetry, Billy Collins is amazing! He was the poet laureate at one point. Highly recommend. For a sample search on YouTube to hear him read his poem The Lanyard. It’s my favorite!

This is not her most recent, but it made my top ten list this year,
Morning In The Burned House: Poems by Margaret Atwood

Monument: Poems New and Selected by Natasha Trethewey

A really fun audio with a lot of classic variety :The Poets' Corner: The One-and-Only Poetry Book for the Whole Family - performed by John Lithgow.

I agree with Anita about Billy Collins and with Robin about Amanda Gorman.

So if I'd chosen Poetry for this month's tag instead of Historical Mystery (Yes, that was me) do you think it would have had a snowball's chance of being chosen?

The truth is, I might have trouble with a requirement to read an entire book of poetry in one go. I tend to read individual poems, now and then as snacks. I can almost never memorize them unless they're set to music, but I like to reread favorites over and over again. I don't have an English degree so my poetry reading is sometimes like the person who goes to an art museum and says ' I don't know anything about art, but I know what I like.' I can spend whole afternoons online with The Poetry Foundation; https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems

Thank you! I will do some exploring. I have an entire year to read that poetry volume for PS.

I also agree with you on dipping into volumes of poetry, not reading cover to cover in a sitting ir two. I also lustened to Leonard Cohen read that volume of poetry but also bought the book because of the art he included - his art. Book of Longing was the title.

Collections of essays and short stories (not those like Olive, Again that are interconnected) are the same. I can do a couple here and there, spread out. Often reread one or two. But several collections in a row? No and that is why they won't end up a monthly tag - but work great in Steeplechase!

This poetry discussion has me remembering being a student at Barnard and teaching one of my Columbia College friends how to read, pull out meaning and symbolism, in a Mallarmé poem, so he could write an essay for his french lit class. He was so thrilled when he got an A! I felt as if I got an A too as in the process of helping him, I went deeper into the poem myself! Developed a connection that had escaped me when I had studied it the year before in one of my French classes.

It taught me that a poem generally merits a few visits.

I too like Amanda Gorman.

I am the same about essays and short stories - not enough meat to them - unless they are a collection related to a fantasy or mystery series I already like. But the kind of short stories that seem to be in the New Yorker are much like modern poetry - evasive and abstract.
