Ellen | 3569 comments Long-orphaned Veronica Speedwell has just buried her last relation and at age 24 she is now truly on her own. It is 1887 in London and although it is not seemly for women to travel on their own that is exactly what Veronica intends to do. She had traveled widely for many years as a devoted lepidopterist and natural scientist while enjoying brief romances and occasional dangerous situations. Before she can set off on what she hopes will be an extended journey she is attacked in her home and nearly kidnapped. A stranger, a German baron, thwarts the kidnapping and delivers Veronica to his friend Stoker to guard with his life. The baron insists he will explain everything to her soon but he is murdered before he is able to enlighten Veronica about her mysterious past. Stoker fulfills his duty by taking Veronica on the run where they slowly uncover the secrets of Veronica's heritage and a fact that suddenly makes her the most dangerous woman in England.

I believe if you looked up the word 'feisty' in the dictionary, Veronica's picture should be there. My goodness she is unflappable. I do like her character and thoroughly enjoyed the flirtatious relationship with Stoker. It did seem to take a very long time to get down to the business of the murder mystery but it was an exciting story.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12824 comments I enjoyed this book too, enough that I already have book 2 waiting its turns for this month. I also liked the relationship between Stoker and Veronica, and she will become one of my favorite fictional characters, I am sure.

Hannah | 3399 comments Seeing everyone reading this series for the first time is making me remember how much I enjoyed binge reading them last year. I'm all caught up with the books that have been published so far, but at least there are only a couple more months to wait for the next book to be published.
