In this science fiction thriller set in the city of Artemis on the earth’s moon, protagonist Jazz Bashara is a twenty-six-year-old who is anxious to make money. She is hired by a man called Trond to disrupt the mining of lunar anthorite, used in the smelting of aluminum, which has silicon and oxygen byproducts. This would enable Trond to take over the business of supplying oxygen to the city. The only problem is that the current business turns out to be a front for a Brazilian organized crime syndicate. When she tries to sabotage their mining activities, she ends up in mortal danger. She is a smart cookie, though, and does everything she can to stay alive. This involves coming up with her own plan to put the mob out of business on the moon.

Jazz is a feisty character. She is clever, resilient, and has a sarcastic sense of humor. She gets out of one scrape after another. This book is action-packed and entertaining. I think part of the reason I liked this so much is the scientific details that are inserted into the story in a natural manner. Weir describes a plausible scenario for living on the moon, with all its attendant dangers. I liked the “bubbles” they live in, the buildings named for the astronauts who walked on the moon, and the Tranquility Base tourist attraction. The plot is a bit over-the-top, but I decided to just go with the flow and ended up enjoying it quite a bit. If you enjoy lots of science in your science fiction, as I do, give this one a try.
