grllopez ~ with freedom and books (with_freedom_and_books) | 140 comments This was a really powerful poem. This may be my favorite, and it is the last one of the selected poems for Dunbar via TWEM. But I would definitely read more by this poet.

Narrated from the perspective of a slave woman whose son is called off to the Civil War (he heard the call); he fights for the Union. She did not want him to go, but she thought him honorable in his Union uniform.

Meanwhile, her mistress's husband and son also went off to war, to fight for the Confederacy. Together both women share the anguishes of war and loss of their loved ones.
