I'm on the fence about Jennifer. It sounds like she tricked Lucas into fathering the child. He didn't intend to be in a committed relationship, and she knows it. They deserve each other. Both of them need to learn how to be truthful. No. If they marry, it won't last long. Besides, I don't think they love each other. She uses Lucas for information, and he uses her body.
I'm assuming that the prophylactic failed, rather than that she tricked him, although I could have overestimated her. We knew her clock was ticking and she would be more likely to have an intelligent child by him.I do not think he could trust her, Girl Scout's honor nothwithstanding.
I do remember that, fairly late in the story, he thought that he was (surprisinginly) in love. The question is with her, or with the coming baby?
She does know that he is a hopelessly unfaithful type with women, so perhaps she ought not to marry him. However, in 1988, it might have been difficult if she shared his Catholic faith to turn marriage down. He tells her he does not want his child to be a "bastard."
Jennifer - when I really thought about it - she and Lucas deserve each other. They both lie. She wants him just to get to get a scoop for her job. He just wants sex. I'd like to point out - that Lucas made it seem to Jennifer that she was the only one with the toothbrush comment close to the front of the story - before he invited Carla to his lake house. I dislike cheating - didn't help me that I read this and then went right into listening to Blindsighted - with another cheater. Both of these are 'old' books. They are very realistic to the timeframe they were written in.
Jennifer - I think the Girl Scouts honor thing was crap. Liars gonna lie whenever its convenient to/for them. Just like cheaters gonna cheat when its convenient for them.
I'm not going to lie - I hated her. I felt she trapped him with the baby thing, then continually disrespected him and hos investigation. I thought she was self-centered and manipulative.

Regarding the toothbrush, she is the only woman who has one at his house. She knows he isn't faithful regardless. It wouldn't surprise me if she cheats to get a story too. You're right they deserve each other.
Melissa, regarding Blindsighted don't let the cheating turn you away. That is one of the best series, and the spin off, Will Trent, I LOVE!!!
