Jen K | 3197 comments Veronica Speedwell is a woman outside the norms of Victorian society. She is a natural historian, a lepidopterist and makes her own rules when she travels overseas to collect specimens. She is quite unfazed when she returns home from her aunt's funeral to find a burglar intent on carrying her off. At the same time a kind stranger arrives who may know the secret of her birth and mother so she accepts his offer to London and protection of staying with his friend Stoker, a fellow natural historian. This is the start of grand adventure to learn more of Veronica's background and more urgently, who is after her.

Veronica and Stoker are great characters will excellent rapport and fun dialogue. There's is a great start for a relationship and I expect they will find more adventures. The story was a bit addictive and while some was obvious, I did not expect the big surprise. I look forward to more of the series.

KateNZ | 4149 comments I think this has been the book of the month! So many of us have devoured it (even if some liked it better than others).

I’m in the “liked it” camp too. I’ve read the second which was just as fun. And the third has just downloaded from the library. Not sure the February tag is going to get much of a look-in…

Jen K | 3197 comments I have to say that I was very swayed by all the positive endorsements for this book when I landed on Victorian for Steeplechase. But also very glad for the push because I really thought it was fun!
