Brief introduction to the author and her autobiography ( courtesy: Wekipedia)Zora Neale Hurston (January 7, 1891: 17 : 5 – January 28, 1960) was an American author, anthropologist, and filmmaker. She portrayed racial struggles in the early-1900s American South and published research on hoodoo. The most popular of her four novels is Their Eyes Were Watching God, published in 1937. She also wrote over 50 short stories, plays, and essays.
Dust on the Road Tracks
It begins with Hurston's childhood in the black community of Eatonville, Florida, then covers her education at Howard University where she began as a fiction writer, having two stories published under the guidance of Charles S. Johnson. It also covers her anthropological work under Franz Boas that led to her study Mules and Men (1935).
The publishers forced extensive changes on the book, making Hurston remove a lengthy attack on American imperialism in Asia; she was also required to tone down sexually explicit anthropological content and remove some libellous passages. This resulted in a work that appeared not to condemn America's mistreatment of ethnic minorities and was consequently attacked for pandering to white audiences.
I heard this is a rough read for not-native English readers, so I think I'll skip this one. I'm being really moody and don't feel like starting a challenging read.
I'm a huge Zora fan, and loved this very entertaining autobiography. I won't be re-reading, but I'll be interested in the discussion.
this looks like an amazing read but I'm not sure if I can fit it right now and have added it to my tbr
