Sad story about a thirteen-year-old dealing with his mother’s severe illness. Conor lives with his mother. His parents are divorced and his father lives in America. Conor has had recurring nightmares. One midnight, a yew tree monster appears at his bedroom window. The tree tells him three stories and asks Conor for a fourth, but only if it is the truth. It is difficult for an adult to handle such a situation and even harder for a child. It is an emotional story that avoids becoming manipulative. I could have done without the bullying subplot – not sure it added much. Overall, I think the author does a nice job with tough topic.
