You could look into Riley Sager's work, like Final Girls. Also The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix. The obvious ones would be Thomas Harris' Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs. Opinions vary greatly on his later books.
Older books worth noting:
Twilight by William Gay (completely lacking twinkly vampires; one of the best books I've read in the last 20 years)
The Face That Must Die by Ramsey Campbell (finding it in an affordable edition might be a challenge, but it's good)
Finishing Touches by Thomas Tessier (I've still to read a few of Tessier's other books, but they might also be worth looking into; this one is excellent)
I keep meaning to read Mo Hayder's novels but not getting around to them. You might want to look into them.
For human killers/ coming of age books I'd recommend December Park by Ronald Malfi and What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall.Otherwise, I'd suggest Come With Me by Ronald Malfi, The Lost Village by Camilla Sten, and Christmas Presents by Lisa Unger.

Ideally in a coming of age setting and where you love the main characters.
Thanks for recommendations.
