This is a pretty typical romance, in this case Victorian rather than Regency. It is part of a series about 4 friends who call themselves The Wallflowers, because for various reasons they aren't succeeding in London society. Of course during the 4 books, they each find true love. This episode has several tropes - a marriage of convenience, a reformed rake, an ugly duckling. Though of course she isn't ugly at all, she just has red hair, which was sometimes considered a bad thing but of course isn't. And she stutters, though that improves almost entirely once she gets away from her cruel family. Through a number of trials, she proves to be stronger than she (or anyone thought). There is a lot of bantering, which I enjoy, and a subplot with a bad guy, which I don't. Putting the heroine at risk so that the hero can rescue her gets old, though sometimes it's the other way around. Often, as in this case,, the woman not only gets her man, but she makes him a better person.
