So I have all three books in the OUABH series but I haven't read the Carnival trilogy. I was told it is a spin off. Can I just read the OUBAH series or do I have to read Carnival first? From what I've heard, I think I would only enjoy the OUABH series, can I just skip Carnival or will I be lost in this spin-off?

I would read Caraval. It really sets up Jacks' character. I think, to like him from the get-go, you need that backstory. The series might surprise you. I thought it was good.Having said that, of course you can read it without. You'll miss some (IMO) important elements, but you'll have no trouble following the story.
I read the whole OUABH trilogy and you actually don't need to know anything about Caraval to understand the plot. I didn't read C. at all because I don't find the plot very appealing. I read that C. only gives you a small peace of Jack's history with his "actual true love" but you can just look it up on google then.
I would totally read Caraval first, but that's just my opinion. I personally liked Caraval better and certain plot twists would have been ruined had I started off with OUABH.

It really helped when they talked about certain things in OUABH. Or else I would have been confused or felt like they skimmed over certain things without any additional description. I also loved Caraval and am struggling getting through the second book of OUABH.

In fact, i read all 3 books of the OUABH series and understood it right away, only to find out there are more books preceding it. So no, you don't have to read it. It's a very interesting series and hope u enjoy it just like i did!
