An older book to begin showing as a series on Hulu on Feb 27, 2024. This has been a series on TV before in 1980, based on the 1975 book.

When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, Lord Yoshii Toranaga discovers secrets that could tip the scales of power and devastate his enemies. Set in the 17th Century, the story is told from the perspective of British hero John Blackthorne, a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai, while being used as a pawn in Japanese leader Toranaga's struggle to reach the top of the ruling chain, or Shogun.

♥ Sandi ❣ | 627 comments It sounds like Shogun has been nominated for the most Emmy awards of any other TV series this year.

♥ Sandi ❣ | 627 comments Had looked forward to this one. Had heard good things about it. When I started it I saw that there is a lot of Japanese spoken with subtitles. Turned me off immediately!!!!!! Guess I will take everyone's word that this is a good series - I wont be watching.

Barbara | 14 comments I saw both series and also read the book. The one drawback with the series from the 80s (or 70s?) was that there was this narrated intro to the scenes that was a little unusual. But in every other respect it followed the text and the tone of the book much better than the '24 series.

♥ Sandi ❣ | 627 comments I remember reading the book too Barbara - way back when. I also watched the original series featuring Richard Chamberlain and enjoyed that one. (Did you hear that Chamberlain just passed away this week?) I was looking forward to this revised edition, until I heard about the subtitles - and they really shut me down, so won't be watching this one.

Barbara | 14 comments The new version was inferior in just about every way to the old one.
I am sad about Chamberlain - he was a really great actor, very underrated. People who saw him on the stage said he was wonderful. And he was a much better, more nuanced and accurate Blackthorne, IMHO, than the guy in the recent series.
