This, to me, exemplifies exactly why I wrote Bell Hammers. It was a Democratic commissioned survey of the town of my birth in the 50’s when only 5,000 people lived there. You have a great, simple account of everyone who lives in town, their political biases, how those biases fall by the wayside in the face of great need or great opportunity.

It captures the region’s voice and shows precisely why it’s so important to talk about the places we inhabit and the people who live there with grace and nuance.
