Jen K | 3229 comments Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in Charon County and still not respected by all despite his UVA degree and FBI background. Crown technically came back to help his father but also his FBI career ended unexpectedly. In the hopes to do more and save more, he runs for sheriff never expecting his community to have a school shooting. The loss of a beloved teacher at the hands of a troubled student brought out the racial strife in the community. Yet the shooting is only the tip of the troubles uncovered as Crown races against the clock to close in on a bigger monster.

The setting of Charon county is so real and important to this story of betrayal, race and social justice. While hunting a serial killer, Crown must still deal with confederates demanding protection for a parade to celebrate traitors and hate. At the heart of the cruelty is abuse of black and brown bodies who are seen as lesser. There also Titus who feels betrayed by a higher power who didn't save his mother and now is spurred by the guilt to try to save others. It is a violent but thoughtful read.
