grllopez ~ with freedom and books (with_freedom_and_books) | 140 comments The narrator is considering his past pleasures and joys, how he sought pleasure in his youth; but now that he is older, he seeks pain, as a way to feel connected to the earth.

This poem reminisces about love, passion, and sweet pleasures in days gone by, some encounters too hot to handle! He "ached" for these experiences. There were times that the beauty of the experience was more than he could take because it caused him pain.

Now that he is older, his experiences are all painful, but he has accepted it. In fact, he seeks it out. Apparently, he believes that the pain will make him more connected to the earth, and that is what he desires.

I'm here to say, I don't understand why the narrator wants to experience pain in order to feel connected to the earth. I understand the idea that one wants to feel in order to know he is alive, but why feel connected to the earth? The earth is passing away.

Well, to each his own, I suppose.
