I'd say this comparison was pretty spot-on... I zoomed through most of the book, while doing spreadsheet stuff... then my ipod died... it's charging now... probably won't finish until tomorrow morning...
I totally burned through this also, but I had a really hard time paying attention--I liked the MC, and her pride, I liked the cultural aspects and bits of Mayan pantheon. I think I'm going to pick up my physical book though, and see if I can get a better handle on the story... I'm not sure if it's my lingering cold or the narrator that had me phasing out and rewinding a lot, and still not catching on...
I didn't feel like I needed to pay too much attention... with a familiarity in mythology / folklore, and deathy stories, I felt like I knew what to expect going in, and wasn't really disappointed...
There were some 1930s contemporary / Spanish elements, but nothing too big...
