Namibia: A Country to Discover

Day 6: Fish River Canyon and Kalahari Desert

One of the major tourist attractions in Namibia is Fish River Canyon, located in the southern part of the country. In size it is second only to the Grand Canyon in North America. In fact, it extends for approximately 160 km (99 mi) and its width in certain points reaches 27 km (17 mi), while the depth exceeds 500 m (1640 feet) in some areas. The canyon was formed after a telluric movement due to the erosion of the Fish River, although it is difficult to believe this today because the river is dry for most of the year. Despite the semi-arid climate, many animal species live in the canyon, and birds can be admired, especially when water is present.
* Read a book that has all the letters in FISH found in the title (any order) OR read a book sitting at one of the following positions on your TBR when sorted by number: 17, 27, 99, 160, 500, or 1640. (share TBR number used).

The eastern part of the country is partly covered by the Kalahari Desert, the sixth largest desert in the word. It was previously mentioned in our Safari Adventure in Botswana Challenge because a large part of it is found in this nation. If you have not yet gone to that country, it is worth taking an excursion there because it is rich in wild fauna. The desert is also home to the remaining San tribes (also known as Bushmen). They are the oldest people in Southern Africa, and are increasingly forced to assimilate into modern life, abandoning the nomadic life of their ancestors.
* Read a book set in an arid/desert climate (tell us where) OR read a book with an indigenous character (tell us who).
Day 7: Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park owes its name to the salt desert that makes up a quarter of its territory. In fact, etosha means "big white place" in the local indigenous language. When it was founded in 1907, it was the largest wildlife reserve in the world. It is sad to say that since the 1960's, its territory has been progressively reduced to its current and smaller size. It is believed that millions of years ago there was a shallow lake here that dried up when the river that fed it diverted its course. During the rainy season this saline wasteland can become flooded. The rest of the park's territory has vegetation largely made up of acacias and mopane trees.
* Read a "big" book (over 450 pages - share page count) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK (3 words minimum).

The park is a popular tourist destination for its diverse concentration of wildlife. Someone counted the animal species present here: 114 mammals, 340 birds, 110 reptiles, 16 amphibians and even one fish! The best way to see all this animal life is to lurk near one of the 86 waterholes (some are artificial) present in the park, especially during the dry season (from April to December). If you are lucky, you will be able to take a photograph like the ones above!
* Read a book published in the month of April or December of any year (share publication date) OR read a book whose cover art is a photograph rather than an illustration (post cover).
Day 8: Kaokoland and Epupa Falls

Kaokoland is a territory in the northern part of Namibia. It is a mountainous region with an arid climate, but is crossed by several waterways. The most famous representative of the local fauna is the aforementioned desert elephant. It is a separate subspecies of elephant, which manages to survive in a truly prohibitive environment. Their most obvious physical characteristic is having particularly short legs. Most tourists, however, go this far north to meet the Himba, to whom a passage is dedicated below.
* Read a "short" book (between 100-200 pages - share page count) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in KAOKOLAND.

The great natural attraction of this region are the Epupa Falls. It is a series of large waterfalls on the Cunene River which forms the border with Angola. Rightly epupa means “foam” in the Herero language. The falls are very difficult to reach and a 4x4 vehicle is needed. Even with its remote location, there are several lodges nearby, many featuring campsites. In addition to the beauty of the falls, the surrounding area is also interesting as it is still quite uncontaminated.
* Read a book that has been translated from another language OR read a book with a waterfall on its cover or mentioned in the text (post cover or share text).
Day 9: Damaraland and The Caprivi Strip

Damaraland is an arid, mountainous region located in north-central Namibia. The main attraction is the Twyfelfontein Valley, designated a UNESCO Heritage Site for the 2000 rock paintings and graffiti that are visible on the local sandstone. They are attributed to the ancestors of the current San and many are believed to be over a thousand years old. The paintings are found in 14 different sites located throughout the valley. Nearby is the petrified forest of Khorixas, the largest accumulation of fossil trunks in southern Africa. The well preserved trunks are found in an ancient river channel where they were presumably dragged there by a flood, and then covered by sediments that caused them to become fossilized.
* Read a series book #1, #4 or #14 OR read a book that has over 2000 REVIEWS on its GR Homepage (share number).

The so-called “Caprivi Strip” is very curious. It is a thin strip of Namibian territory that is wedged between Angola and Zambia to the north and Botswana to the south. It was acquired in 1890 to allow connections between the German colonies of South-West Africa and Tanganyika (current Tanzania). But the route was later found unpassable because of the location of Victoria Falls. From a tourist perspective, the Caprivi Strip's three rivers make the area richest in water, so the fauna is also particularly rich. Three national parks (Bwabwata, Mudumu, and Nkasa Rupara NP) have been created to protect this rich environment. They are lesser known parks, but definitely worth visiting if you get the chance.
* Read a book set in a national park (tell us where) OR read a book with a title that starts with a letter in CAPRIVI (ignore A, An or The).
Day 10: Indigenous Populations

The majority of Namibia's population belongs to ethnic groups of the Bantu, the largest being the Ovambo. But there are two ethnic groups that particularly attract the interests of tourists: the Himba and the Herero. Herero society is centered on the possession of livestock and they have integrated into modern life by working large farms. Tourists are attracted to this ethnic group by the women's clothes, which were adopted in colonial times. They resemble Victorian dresses with a crinoline, several petticoats and a horn-shaped headdress, making the Herero people the most culturally recognizable tribe in Namibia.
* Read a book set on a farm OR read a book set in the Victorian period (between 1837 and 1901).

The best-known indigenous population, however, is that of the Himba. They are closely related to the Herero, but unlike them they still live like their ancestors. These are nomadic shepherds who mainly raise cows and goats. Tourists love visiting their villages, made up of conical-shaped huts, and above all (and unfortunately, it must be said) photographing the women, who even today wear few items of clothing. But more fascinating is that they cover their bodies and hair with a red butter-based mixture of ocher and herbs, used to protect them from the sun.
* Read a book with a woman MC OR read a book whose title is printed in red on the cover (post cover).

3 Months from Start Date
We have a new adventure and a new country to discover. Patrizia is taking us to Africa.
Namibia is one of the youngest states in Africa. In fact, it only obtained its independence from South Africa in 1990. Before becoming its own nation it had been a German colony (1884-1918), then an English holding (1918-1961), and then a province of South Africa. After Mongolia, it is the country with the lowest population density in the world, which is not surprising given that a large part of its territory is covered by desert. Despite this, Namibia has a lot to offer a tourist who loves nature and a bit of adventure.

Day 1: Windhoek
Arriving in Namibia, you will land in its capital: Windhoek. The city, which was initially the seat of a local tribe, experienced a troubled history. It was colonized by German settlers in 1890, becoming the capital of German South-West Africa two years later. Its two most interesting monuments are Christuskirche (a historic Lutheran church) and Alte Feste (the old German fort). Unfortunately, there are no longer any traces of the hot thermal springs that originally attracted the indigenous Nama and Herero populations to this area.
* Read a book with a title that begins with W or ends with K (ignore A, An or The) OR read a book set in a capital city (tell us where).
Namibia is one of the few African countries where it is safe to travel without relying on an organized tour. In Windhoek you can rent a car and collect the necessary permits to enter the national parks. It is recommended you rent a 4x4 vehicle, being that most of the secondary roads are not asphalted. The capital is located, roughly, in the center of the country, so it is advisable to organize a circular route that takes you to visit the various points of interest. Avoid driving after dark because it is easy for wild fauna to suddenly cross the roads, causing accidents that are sometimes fatal (not just for the animals).
* Read a book with a road trip in it (share destination) OR read a series book #4.
Day 2: Namib Desert
Namibia owes its name to the Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world. It is largely located in protected areas, including the Namib-Naukluff National Park, which is the largest national park on the entire continent. A well-known tourist destination is Sossusvlei, a salt flat where you can find both Dune 45 (perhaps the most photographed dune in the world) and Big Daddy (the highest dune in the world). Another much-photographed desert spot is Deadvlei, a depression characterized by white sandy soil and a large number of acacia trees, which died after the river that passed through here diverted its course due to the movement of the dunes.
* Read a book where the MC takes a photograph (tell us what was photographed) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in NAMIB-NAUKLUFF NATIONAL PARK (3 words minimum).
Although a desert, the Namib is not devoid of life. Here it is possible to admire the oryx, a large antelope with truly enormous horns, or the so-called desert elephants, which manage to survive by moving from one oasis to another. The oryx can be found elsewhere, but it is certainly the symbolic animal of Namibia. The desert is also home to one of the most unique plants in the world: the Welwitschia mirabilis. Even though it does not have a trunk, it is considered a tree. Its ribbon-shaped leaves grow from the base, and the ends gradually dry up and die.
* Read a book where a wild animal is mentioned (share text) OR read a book with a unique plant featured on the cover (post cover).
Day 3: The Skeleton Coast
The Namib desert reaches up to the Atlantic coast. The meeting between its hot air and the humid cold winds from the ocean creates very intense fog, which in the past have been the cause of numerous shipwrecks. Along the coast it is possible to encounter the wrecks of many ships, some of which are today very far from the coastline because the desert is slowly moving westwards, advancing into the sea.
* Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in SHIPWRECKS (ignore A, An, or The) OR read a book where adverse climate conditions cause problems (briefly explain what happens).
Most of the Namibian coast is protected, thanks to the existence of several national parks. In addition to the typical African fauna, along the coast it is possible to admire colonies of fur seals, especially north of Walvis Bay. The colony at Cape Cross is quite famous. Walvis Bay (Bay of Whales) owes its name to the fact that the bay has always been frequented by whales. Today it is a thriving port, and its position in the center of the coastline represents a good starting point for excursions to nearby protected areas.
* Read a book set in a coastal town (tell us where) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in WALVIS BAY.
Day 4: Lüderitz
Lüderitz is located on the Atlantic coast and is practically surrounded by desert. It is known as “Desert Munich” for its Bavarian-style buildings. The first settlements date back to 1487, when the Portuguese navigator Bartolomeo Diaz arrived here. But it owes its name to the tobacco merchant, Adolf Lüderitz, who came to the area attracted by the possibility of finding deposits of precious metals. In reality he found nothing, and after his death, the town managed to overcome a major economic crisis by dedicating itself to fishing.
* Read a book from a series that is named after its MC (share series name) OR read a book tagged HISTORICAL or HISTORY in its GR homepage.
From Lüderitz, and the aforementioned Walvis Bay, it is possible to reach the archipelago of the Penguin Islands. This group of islands and rocks located along the coast owes their name to the fact that the area is frequented by the South African penguin. The islands are rich in guano (seabird excrement), which has been used as organic fertilizer for centuries. More important are the islands strategic position. So much so that, together with Walvis Bay, they remained under South African control until 1994, four years after Namibia gained its independence.
* Read a book whose MC's first name starts with a letter in PENGUIN (share name) OR read a book with an island setting (tell us where).
Day 5: Kolmanskop
A few kilometers from Lüderitz is the ghost town of Kolmanskop. The town developed after a diamond was found in the area in 1908. The first diamond miners were particularly lucky and Kolmanskop grew into a town, complete with hospital, theater and casino. In fact, the first tram service in Africa was also established here. However, after the First World War, the diamond mines began to run out and Kolmanskop was definitively abandoned in 1954. The Namib desert is slowly invading the homes with its dunes and the atmosphere is made even more ghostly by the morning fog. Regardless, it is one of the most photographed places in the country.
* Read a book with a cover that gives you shivers (post cover) OR read a book the features a ghost (briefly share details).
To visit Kolmanskop, it is necessary to have a special permit because it is located within the Sperrgebiet (restricted area). This was created by the German government to protect the diamond deposits, controlling who could enter to avoid theft. The area is still controlled by De Beers, although since the 1990's the Namibian government has established a partnership with this South African diamond company. In 2004, the area was designated the Tsa ||Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park, which also requires a special permit to visit. The park features the wreck of a sixteenth-century ship found in 2008. The finds (which include Iberian coins, bronze cannons, and ivory) plan to be exhibited in a specially built museum in Oranjemund.
* Read a book where a partnership happens (briefly explain details) OR read a book published between 2004 and 2008 (share publication date).
