For years, single father Toby Tucker has done his best to keep his sensitive young son, Luca, safe from the bigotry of the world. But when Toby marries Alyssa Wright—the granddaughter of a famed televangelist known for his grandiose, Old Testament preaching—he can’t imagine the world of religion, wealth, and hate that he and Luca are about to enter.

A trip to the Wright family’s compound in sun-scorched Texas soon turns hellish when Toby realizes that Alyssa and the rest of her brood might have some very strange plans for Toby and his son. The situation only grows worse when a freak storm cuts off the roads and the family patriarch is found murdered, stabbed through the heart on the roof of the family’s mansion.

Suspicion immediately turns to Toby, but when his son starts describing a spectral figure in a black suit lurking around the house with unfinished business in mind, Toby realizes this family has more than murder to be afraid of. And as the Wrights close in on Luca, no one is prepared for the lengths Toby will go in the fight to clear his name and protect his son.

started this one last night, maybe 4% into the book and it's odd so far... I'm a little lost in what's happening, but I'm hoping it'll make more sense the more I read

I also liked how accepting the dad was!! I listened to the author's note too and he said how he was inspired by moving back in with his parent's during Covid and how he realized how amazing his dad was. definitely brought a tear to my eye.

I also agree though that there are way too many characters. I know it's too keep you guessing, but even at the very end there were times when I was like "who??" (hide spoiler)]

I was definitely getting the "get out" vibes with how rushed the courting and then marriage was. I'm sad that I feel like he fell for something that may not be what is good for his son

this feels comically over-the-top. this religious family somehow is both absolutely weirdly terrible and they are all psychopaths AND they own everyone and everything and yet. They exploit children AND murder people.

Yet, the show is tanking, they are losing relevance and they have no money? I mean, it can't be all the things all the time, right?

Without money they have no power. They can try to wield it but won't be able to pay people to stay quiet. and without influence and power, no one is under their pressure anymore. . .I'm surprised the family they "let go" after forcing them to not get their inheritance - I'm surprised THEY aren't talking and taking this family down (hide spoiler)]
