Kick starting our club first read with Convenience Store woman by Sayaka Murata.

All discussions to go in this folder. Share with us your thoughts on the book, ur favourite quote or line, the character you like the most or any or everything that you liked about this book.

A little about the Book

Keiko has never fit in, neither in her family, nor in school, but when at the age of eighteen she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of “Smile Mart,” she finds peace and purpose in her life. In the store, unlike anywhere else, she understands the rules of social interaction―many are laid out line by line in the store’s manual―and she does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a “normal” person excellently, more or less. Keiko is very happy, but the people close to her, from her family to her coworkers, increasingly pressure her to find a husband, and to start a proper career, prompting her to take desperate action…

A brilliant depiction of a world hidden from view, Convenience Store Woman is an ironic and sharp-eyed look at contemporary work culture and the pressures we all feel to conform, as well as a charming and completely fresh portrait of an unforgettable heroine.

This book is explaining fitting one self into society so well. That I was really reflecting & thought to myself that don't we all face these challenges of fitting into society or our friend circles at some point in our lives.

What are your thoughts?

Nora (Grayson's version) (noraseed) | 11 comments Exactly. Sometimes it's good to know that even others feel the same way as us and that we are not alone.

Yes that’s true. Being in my late 30’s & unmarried, I can truly relate with the character of Keiko Furukura & the excuses she has to make all the time.

Besides Keiko Furukura character, is there any other character that is liked or hated in this book?

For me I would say Shiraha I kind of found him irritating but loved him opinion on society & how the village functioned.

What are your thoughts?

Nora (Grayson's version) (noraseed) | 11 comments I felt that Shiraha is kind of annoying but most of the time what he speaks is so true. It changes my perspective of society. I can't say that I like him though...

Yes, I don’t like him either.

♥ Sandi ❣ | 146 comments I have not yet read this book, but have it on hold at the library now. But I find that so many Japanese authors hide the real meaning of their story behind the simple story that is there to read. That seems to be a feature of Japanese literature. There is always a moral to the story if you look for it. I know they often write about cats - but the cat or the actions of the cat is a substitute for something else.

♥ Sandi ❣ | 146 comments I did read the book. I enjoyed it - think it is a great read for those who sometimes feel alone or left out. I liked the fortitude and stamina that Keiko kept throughout the story. She knew what she was good at and how she felt included and important, regardless of what others thought.

I think the deeper meaning here is to let people be themselves - accept others for who they are and don't put your luggage at their feet.

Hey
That was such a lovely way to summarise the meaning of the book. I felt the same. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
