A young couple find themselves haunted by a string of gruesome murders committed along an old deserted road in this terrifying new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Cold Cases.

July 1995. April and Eddie have taken a wrong turn. They’re looking for the small resort town where they plan to spend their honeymoon. When they spot what appears to a lone hitchhiker along the deserted road, they stop to help. But not long after the hitchiker gets into their car, they see the blood seeping from her jacket and a truck barreling down Atticus Line after them.

When the hitchhiker dies at the local hospital, April and Eddie find themselves in the crosshairs of the Coldlake Falls police. Unexplained murders have been happening along Atticus Line for years and the cops finally have two witnesses who easily become their only suspects. As April and Eddie start to dig into the history of the town and that horrible stretch of road to clear their names, they soon learn that there is something supernatural at work, something that could not only tear the town and its dark secrets apart, but take April and Eddie down with it all.

Ruth, I think the game changes when there is a young man or middle aged man standing in the road, or even needing help and someone picks him up. There are so many issues on picking up people, for instance, you know we never see if anyone is close by so that when you pick someone up, someone else isn't running up to the door with a gun, or a 2 man tag team. It was cool in the 60's and 70's to just pick up folks and go on your merry way, but times have changed and you just can't even pick up women period. Remember that case where the woman was being picked up by truck drivers, and she ended up killing them, then was put to death by the state? ...This couple was doomed from the start. but they did have a paper map. But I wouldn't have chanced it just because they didn't really see who they were picking up UNTIL they picked her up.

Yeah, I remember the grandma and the 2 kids, and to be honest with ya, I think I would pick up a woman with kids, that's my down-fall, I look t the kids, and want to make sure that everything is okay with them.

People, People, you do NOT have to go anyplace with the Police unless they tell YOU that your being investigated, and not only that, but when they give you orders to go to a place that they want you to go, YOU don't have to go, PERIOD. Now in this case, you have 2 police officers ( Detectives ) that tell a couple to go to this Air B&B and did they have a choice? YES THEY DID.....They were not arrested, or detained.....no Miranda rights, NOTHING, just wanted to make sure that they stick around in town..give me a break....

I would have went someplace else on my dime, because like you stated, maybe the Police had a contract with this Air B&B, so that would set an alarm off with me....example is this, if there is 4 different places in that area, and the Police sent you there, wouldn't that set a bell off? How do we NOT know that the place is corrupt? or even you getting out alive?

So I don't know if women in general are investigators by breed or just by being nosey. I think ( key word ) that women are generally nosey and better investigators than men. I read this book, and April seems to be on to something, and her husband seems to be more laid back, don't care attitude,
