The Magic Toyshop surprised me greatly..I thought it would be totally uninteresting and difficult to follow. It was quite the opposite. The descriptions of the toyshop and the characters, namely Finn and Uncle Phillip, allowed me to envision what was actually going on. when I first started reading it, it reminded me of The Ice Queen because Melanie felt guilty for the death of her mother. It almost seemed that the storyline was going to follow a similar path, but it went a completely different direction, leading Melanie into a life of confusion and misery, for the most part. I think the reader develops a connection with Melanie because none of the other characters seem human as they all become obsessed with something or another, and they all bow down to Uncle Phillip. Melanie, however, hates him. This short novel is a must read for anyone interested in a fanstastical, but relatable, novel!
