Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is based on Mayan legends and features a strong female lead, a quest and a romance. ⭐⭐ here is my review

I liked this more than you did, but I did have a problem with the characters. I never got the attachment to any characters in the story. They were not all "bit players"-many had large story-lines and yet I was unable to latch on.
