A lot could be shocking to us unless we put it into the context of back then, even then it s hard to imagine a lot of what she went through

Here is what I remember.
Elaine Brown's books was published around the same time as This Side Of Glory by David Hilliard. (It is always amusing to me how similar books/subject get published at the same time. I think there were a couple of other books on or by Black Panthers at this time always).
But these two books stick out in my mind as both authors did a reading at same bookstore and the mostly the same audience attended both reading.
Both books are autobiographies - so it is the history and memories that each of the authors had about what was going on with them.
I think both books should be read together as they each take a different slant on the same things.
I grew up during this time - and while I did not join the Black Panther Party, a couple of my friends did (males).
Elaine Brown's book definitely speaks to the sexism, colorism, and other chauvinistic attitudes that existed in the organization (and during the times for the most part).
Some felt that both books were like "airing your dirty laundry in public".
I've just looked her up in a little bit more detail. A lot of people feel she was an agent for the FBI.
When I was reading the part about her being refused service at a beauty salon because she's black....it brought back the scene from Giant. I mean the exact scene. lol

I'm about half way through and I'm pushing myself to finish. Lol. I feel like she is just slick snitching...I gotta finish it.

A Taste of Power: A Black Woman's Story by Elaine Brown
Brown's account of her life at the highest levels of the Black Panther party's hierarchy. More than a journey through a turbulent time in American history, this is the story of a black woman's battle to define herself.
