Jen K | 3171 comments I really enjoy Maggie O'Farrell's writing and stories. It was really interesting to read her memoir told in 17 stories of literal brushes with death. Some were more common, such as a close call with a passing car, but others were terrifying either in terms of danger from another person or in serious health cases. Her experience with serious illness as a child that continues to have lasting affects and cause more near death experiences was harrowing and then to be a mother to a child who also faces consistent challenges with deathly allergies.

It is interesting to consider how O'Farrell's experiences are reflected in her fiction writing and I appreciate understanding a bit more of those influences. As always, the memoir was well written and and interesting share.

Great review. I think I would like this too. I find that I like Ann Patchett’s novels better after reading her memoirs told in short stories/essays. It adds an interesting depth of understanding.

Ellen | 3539 comments I read this one a few years ago and I was stunned at how many close calls this woman survived! Nice review!

Seriously, I know she considers herself lucky but she has had some harrowing experiences! More than average?
