A brown barn owl was soaring in through the window, a letter clamped in its beak. “I told Owen to take the letters here, it’s easier than waiting for mornings in the great hall.” She indicated the owl, and grabbed the letter gently.
Nico nodded understandingly. “Yeah, that is a lot easier.” He said. “Is this something you want me to see or…?”
“It’s fine,” she opened the letter.
“Dear Lana,
I really thought we had it this time. For a whole minute, I felt this crazy brain boost, you know. But the thing is, Lana, then one of my ears fell off. Mom put it back on, I’m fine, but I had to make up a story about a gnome, I won’t get into the details.
I think she knows something’s up. But we’re so close, Lana, I promise. Send me a knew list of ingredients, instructions, whatever. I think we’re only a few more tries away!
-Clara”

“I’m guessing it’s not good news?” Nico asked. “Anything I could do to help?” He knew what it was like to lose a sister, sure it might not be in the same way as Lana, but he still knew how horrible it felt.
Nico scanned over it. “Jeez, her ear?” He handed it back to her. “Maybe I can help with the spell/potion?” (I forgot which one it was)
Her eyes lit up. “You can? The potion is almost done, maybe you can figure out what’s wrong with the stuff I’m giving her. And her ear really isn’t the worst thing that’s happened, when we first started, it took her half an hour to figure out how to get me to stop acting like a chicken, over the summer.”
Nico did a small laugh at that before looking serious. “Yeah, sure why not? It’ll distract me from the pressure of exams, and I really want to help you with your sister.”
“Thanks! Thank you,” she smiled, looking excited. “Look, I’ll be right back,” she went quickly from the room, after giving him a brief hug.
Nico smiled, watching her run out the door. He headed towards his own owl that had a letter on it as well.
When Lana returned, it was at least ten minutes later. She was clutching a second piece of paper, and shoved it into his hand. “That’s the instructions I gave her this time.”
Nico stuffed his own letter neatly in his pocket before reading Lana’s. “This doesn’t look to difficult.” He said after reading it.
“But what made her ears fall off? It looks fine to me,” she shrugged, hoping he would know. “Who was that? Family?” She added, gesturing to his pocket.!
“Ellie, my older sister.” Nico replied, his tone sounding almost as if he was trying to make her believe it didn’t matter. “Anyway, I don’t even know what could have happened to make her ears fall off honestly.”
“Well, we could try to make a few small adjustments in the proportion of some of these ingredients.” Nico suggested, scanning over the list.
“We can take it to the library later, or now, if you like, and look up some stuff about the ingredients. I must have done that a thousand times, but it’s the only thing I think will help.”
Nico once again nodded. “Yeah, that sounds good.” He stuffed his own letter from his sister deeper into his pocket, as if trying to make it disappear. “Maybe we’ll find something you haven’t before.”
She glanced at his pocket again, noticing how he looked a bit uncomfortable, but said nothing but, “Thanks,”
Nico smiled. “Yeah, sure, no problem!” He headed towards the door and opened it, holding it for Lana. “After you,”
