Play Book Tag discussion

3.5 rounded up. Xingyin has grown up in a palace on the moon, alone except for her mother the moon goddess and her nanny/ companion. As she starts to grow older, she accidentally experiments with her magic causing a visit from the Celestial Empress and prompting her need to leave her home. When all goes awry, Xingyin must find her own way in a new to her world. She latches onto to any and every opportunity to learn and strengthen her skills to one day free her mother. Her goal leads her to make some difficult choices and attempt some dangerous but fascinating quests.

I really enjoyed the lush world presented by Tan and the various magic and creatures found in the Immortal Realm. For the most part, I enjoyed Xingyin and her adventures. There were a few YA tendencies that I don't love such as the angsty inner monologues and very awkward boy drama. The language was also a bit flowery for my taste but probably well suited for the court. Overall I enjoyed and will consider the next book in the series. I especially would like to see more of the dragons and the sea people.
