NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11289 comments This book isn’t quite what I was expecting in a gothic fantasy romance. This book wasn’t as easy as Defensive Baking (there is no army of gingerbread men cookies). The story has plenty of the scary and disgusting things you expect in a horror story, but it’s also a fun adventure. I really liked the characters and that helped get me through the queasy parts.

Marra is living in a convent, hoping to avoid the abusive prince who married her sisters. She travels far to seek help from a powerful dust wife (witch) to kill the prince. The witch agrees, IF she will complete three impossible tasks. The second task was to create a dog out of bones and wire, and bring it to life using magic. Her bone dog was far from cute and cuddly, but it was loyal and very lovable just the same. They gather some great helpers along the way, including a hero and a fairy godmother, and they take on other challenges. They eventually reach the haunted crypt below the castle, which is probably what earned the book the gothic tags.

Sue | 2774 comments Definitely the month for this book!

I really enjoyed it - I used it for "Quirky" in Steeplechase and I have to agree it was wonderfully quirky!
