Hi everyone! Welcome to Book Games, which promises to be all sorts of new fun :)

Whilst it's inspired by Hunger Games, there is no need to be an expert, fan or even to have seen the films - any book over 100 pages is fair game (lighter text books, like kids / graphic novels / plays subject to word count or audio length checks, as ever)

Full rules can be found here, and any official updates will be posted there too.

As a team game, there are some team behaviour expectations, which can basically be summed up as:
- communicate with the captains
- be kind to each other
- read and have fun!

Communicate
Each team has been balanced by sign up book numbers, so if life serves up a curve-ball do let us know! Post here, PM the captains or even the mod account, just let us know if you need to step down from the challenge, read less or whatever.
Similarly, team games are the most fun when we chat - about books, the weather, pets, kids, whatever! And if you don't want to be chatty, we'd still like at least a "still here!" each week :)

Kindness
We all know how easy it is to misinterpret what people mean when you only have text comms to work with. Please assume the best, not worst, of a message - everyone's playing to have fun, so be generous if someone's message rubs you up the wrong way - it is almost certainly not intentional!

Read and Have Fun!
The most important bit - reading and enjoying!
Any book that meets the page / word count is fair game for the challenge, and if you are contributing 1 book or 15 books, they are all equally important!
During the challenge additional tasks might pop up - these are optional (though captains will try and press your books into any slot they can wrangle) - you can claim a task or not, but do bear in mind that captains will reshuffle as new books come in - and all books will be put to their best possible use.

BOMs
Some more optional reading and having fun in participating in the BOMs each month (starting with May's themed BOM).
Feel free to volunteer to write discussion questions (honestly not as scary as it sounds!) for bonus points, or just answer them (and read the book during the challenge) for points too.

Upton | 473 comments REMINDER NOTICE!

Our exalted Captain Cat requested team members add the page count to their Book Games individual shelves. This is a friendly reminder to please accomplish this task :)

Cat's instructions are below on how to add that page count option to your shelf. If you need help with the task, please let me know. You are all the absolute best! Thank you teammates :)

How to do this:
- go to your shelf page
- at the top, below the main ribbon, is the subset of options (reads Batch Edit / Settings / Stats / Print / Enable Sorting)
- select Settings - it'll expand to show all the fields that can be displayed
- select "num pages"
- press the "Save current settings..." button
- smile with a job well done to ease the captains' lives :)

Thanks!

Hello everyone, and welcome to District 10 of Book Games!

I'm Cat (she/her/hers) of London, UK and of course the Mod Squad, and very excited to be captaining this team. I know many names and faces, but a couple of new people so intro:

- long-time NBRC challenger
- big reader of all sorts, most especially SFF (I love me some Pratchett)
- very willing to pick up all sorts of dross in the name of completing a mini task
- very willing to share my pain at reading all sorts of dross in the name of completing a mini task!
- challenge shelf: hunger-games

And, in the spirit of District 10 being all about Livestock, how about suggestions for appropriate reading fodder?
I'm thinking James Herriot's memoirs (All Creatures Great and Small) or perhaps Animal Farm.

What are your recommendations on the Livestock theme?! And what livestock would you have in the district?

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5710 comments Hello team :)

I’m Danielle (she/her) and I’m from Wales. Looking forward to this new challenge, and being one of your co-captains.

I mainly read romance books, with some fantasy, mystery and sci-fi thrown in. I’m a mainly a mood reader, with a few known in advance. If I plan, I never read them, but love a challenge to help decided what book to pick up.

Here’s my shelf games

Need to think on the livestock recommendation.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10153 comments Mod
For livestock, I am going to suggest the awesome many-horned Loaghtan sheep, native to the Isle of Man. look at the magnificent head of horns there, not to mention the fleece!

message 16: by ✿~Danielle~✿ (new)

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5710 comments That’s definitely a good head of horns.

Upton | 473 comments Whoa! That impressive.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10153 comments Mod
Other livestock books I thought of:
Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica - on my TBR, so not a recommendation per se!
The Mare by Mary Gaitskill - not so much about livestock for food, but horses are used in management of herds (even if this horse is not a working horse). I really enjoyed the voice of Velvet in this one, though much of it was hard reading (content, not writing style)
Where's My Cow? (Discworld, #34.5) by Terry Pratchett - Terry does kids book!

oh, I should also add, please do pop into other teams to say hello (or do some smack talking!) In particular District One will be worth checking out....

message 22: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments I'm confused... I was told to come and visit, but then the residents are all pointing some very wickedly sharp things at me.

On the other hand... this is the district to be if we're talking food, weapons and shelter... because the welcome committee can provide it all

Or.. you know.. if you are having trouble sleeping and need to .. ahem... count sheep... the district picture can multitask that way.

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 2140 comments Hello all! Proper intro later, just popping in to say that with all that talk of Highland Cattle in the 'next challenge' thread, we must surely include those in our livestock selection!

I love our sheepy picture!

Damascus goat, apparently very good for both milk and meat, so we'll take them but put them in the far corner for fear of nightmares!

LOVE the fringe!

apart from Keli's Damascus goat aberration, theme is very clearly horns and hair!

I'm interested in the first pig to be proposed. Pigs are amazing but are also only at all attractive as younglings.

Let me present the Mangalitsa from HU. 😉
