Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 329 comments Jerusalem. 2nd love story was gay and cross-faith; quite nicely done. Good book too.

Also with relevant issues, Responses to Oliver Stone's Alexander.

My uncle got me Queen Unseen: My Life with the Greatest Rock Band of the 20th Century for my birthday. I only just started, so I can't pass judgment on it yet, but Queen is my favorite band so I'm sure I'll love it no matter what!

I finished Legends of the Drenai and The Hadrian Enigma. Anyone interested in Hadrian and Antinous should read the latter. It is presented as a mystery.

I also read The Magic of Recluce for another group read. It's book one of an epic fantasy which I enjoyed a lot. But, it's a 14 book series and I have such big piles of unread books...

I just started a re-read of E.E. Doc Smith's Lensmen series, a top Classic SF series from the '40s and '50s, spanning eons.

message 6: by Julia (new)

Julia | 271 comments I finally finished The Paying Guests. I didn't love it. It's only my second Sarah Waters novel, but my first was Fingersmith, so I'll keep reading.

Also finished a delightful YA palate cleanser: Gabi, a Girl in Pieces yesterday.

Today I'm reading A Touch of Stardust by Kate Alcott. Besides Clark Gable's homophobia at not wanting George Cukor to direct "Gone with the Wind," I haven't found much gay content, yet.

I finished the first 2 books in the Lensmen series and am taking a break to read Ultima by Stephen Baxter book 2 in his Proxima series

message 12: by Julia (new)

Julia | 271 comments I'm rereading The Golem and the Jinni and really liking it, though I'm perhaps more aware of its flaws this reading.

Before that I read a lot of YA and mg gems and books I liked.

message 14: by Blake (new)

Blake Fraina Just finished the most amazing Victorian, kinda steampunk-ish, kind Sherlockian fantasy novel - The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley. I hate to say it's an LGBT novel, because that's a bit of a spoiler...but it is. And it's 100% wonderful. It's due for release in July and I think everyone needs to read it.

Now, I'm working on another review copy of a pre-release - More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera. It's YA book with a gay protagonist. It also has a bit of a fantastic element. I tell ya, the Pulley novel is a tough act to follow, but this one isn't bad. Very engaging and sweet.

I did enjoy that book Julia, though it did feel a bit long. I wonder if a little tightening could've picked up the pace just a bit. Some fascinating characters though - the golem and some of the minor characters especially.

Greg I'm about a quarter way through All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr right now. So far, I think it's fantastic!

I just started Tracker by CJ Cherryh book 16 in the brilliant Foreigner series

message 18: by Zefi (new)

Zefi | 7 comments Why hello, so many interesting stuff in this thread!
The one about Hadrian and Antinous really caught my eye, I loved this story ever since I read Fernando Pessoa's poem about it!

I finished The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd last week, I really enjoyed her storytelling and language!

I am now reading Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen by Alix Kates Shulman, considered to be a feminist classic. Interesting writing style, confident and rich, although I have to say there are some scenes of sexual assault which are kind of triggering, without being overly violent.

message 19: by Julia (new)

Julia | 271 comments After rereading The Golem and the Jinni for about two weeks, I mostly really liked it, I'm reading a graphic novel ARC that will be out in July that I hope I can finish today Out on the Wire: Uncovering the Secrets of Radio's New Masters of Story with Ira Glass about the making of public radio shows like This American Life, The Moth and Radio Lab.

Alexandra (little_alex) | 591 comments Just finished Barney Frank's Frank: A Life in Politics from the Great Society to Same-Sex Marriage . You can see my review here.

Now reading Svante Pääbo's Neanderthal Man: In Search of Lost Genomes . Incidentally, this is the second popular science book I've read/am reading whose author turns out to be LGBT...

message 23: by Greg (new)

Greg Just started Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell

message 24: by EmilyAnnEdit (new)

EmilyAnnEdit Only have one chapter left in Shirley Jackson's "We Have Always Lived in the Castle." It's steadily become one of my favorite books!

Haven't read that one yet Pronks, but I read The Haunting of Hill House around Halloween last year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I certainly recommend it! "The Haunting of Hill House" is next on my list by Jackson, I'm looking forward to reading more by her.

message 27: by Greg (new)

Greg I added it to my to-read list Pronks. Thanks!

Forgot to mention - The Haunting of Hill House has some (slightly subtle) lesbian themes as well if that's of interest.
