Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4947 comments Grimspace is the first Sirantha Jax novel from Ann Aguirre. In this part of the universe, space travel requires a pilot and a special navigator like Sirantha to fly through the wormhole-like grimspace. Ships can jump through the galaxies with jumpers who possess a rare gene. Unfortunately, navigating a ship through grimspace significantly shortens a jumper’s life expectancy.

The jumper and the pilot need develop a deep psychic bond. Jax had been jumping with her husband piloting, but on their last trip their ship crashed, killing everyone on board except her.

The characters were interesting including male lead, Marsh. He has some impressive skills and is a bit messed up in his own way. The secondary characters are well written, with their own absorbing side stories. It seems clear future books in the series will expand on them.

The action kicks off early on and never really lets up. One problem I encountered was that both Jax and the reader are being intentionally kept in the dark about the real goal of this group. It does get better once Jax starts functioning as a full member of the crew.

I liked this more than Aguirre's Ars Numina series but not as much as her Galactic Love series I doubt I would continue reading this particular series unless I needed a space opera tagged book, but it was a fun, fast read with a badass female lead.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11273 comments Great review. I enjoyed the one book I read by her, and I’m sorry I didn’t fit in another one this month.

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 1823 comments I've read this one also and have the rest of the series but didn't get to any of them this time around. It's been so long I may need to reread this before continuing.

I've read some of the Ars Numina series (OK), all of the Razorland series (really liked), first of the Gothic fairytales (very good) and the first volume of the Corinne Solomon series (meh) but not the Galactic Love, Apparatus Infernum, or Dred Chronicles series. So I've got plenty more to get to down the road
