I have been very taken up with my son's wedding (the Catholic one is this Saturday and the reception along with a second service is at the end of the month) as well as his upcoming college graduation. I apologize for my long absence.I just finished The Road to the Country (Chigozie Obioma) a novel about the Biafran war. A terribly painful book--if I hadn't gotten it through NetGalley and had to write a review, I never would have finished it. But I'm glad to have read it--beautiful as well as horrifying.
Now I plan on reading several very, very light books to offset the pain of this story.
I hope you are both well. And Ice too.
wow Ellie! I've been wondering what's up with you. Thanks for filling us in and big Congratulations!
Many intersections at present, and a return to picking up books more frequently. Still in the West with the Ingalls family
, In Sweden with
, and in another place
.Talking of another place, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another...
So! I did finally act on my strong impulse to leave Powell River and now i am in Haarlem, in the Netherlands and i will elaborate in the proper thread.Sorry Petra there wasnt the time for us, surely when i get back.
I will admit that ive already broken the vow i made to not buy any books till ive finished the few i brought.
When i walked by a lovely used bookshop I convinced myself that there was no danger in just looking.LOL
there was a paperback copy of Heartsease, unavailable to Canada.
Plus a book on world peace written some time ago.
It has been magnificent only this afternoon it started heavily raining and the hostel where i am staying has a major leak in the lounge that has them filling buckets. In my room are two women from Belgium, one from Minnisota, one from Equador and, of all things, one from Vancouver.
Wow Magdelanye, I have to look this up in the thread where you elaborate! My son graduated college this week and had the second wedding ceremony -- the one with the reception -- what a wonderful experience it was, I'm still floating. I should be more present now
wow Ellie! This must be a huge thrill. Congratulations to you and the newlyweds. It will be great to hear more from y
you!And Petra we havent heard from all month i believe.
Im not doing much reading but ive latched on to a couple of good books and hope to finish them before i leave.
I am almost through the Little House on the Prairie series, and the garden is clamouring for more attention, as are family and friends ! However aiming to cover at least 4 chapters a day.
Magdelanye, you are in the Netherlands?! How wonderful! How long will you be there? Ellie, congratulations to your son for both his wedding and his graduation. Such an exciting time with many new beginnings.
I've been on the Island (with no internet), spending time wiht step-dad.
I haven't been doing much reading. I forgot my ereader at home, so I haven't been reading Birdcall Morning. I'm not enjoying it as much as I'd hoped but it's okay.
Luckily, I took a couple of physical books with me.
Mary Barton is a group read here on GR. I'm enjoying this one. It's very different than what I was expecting for a storyline. It's more a murder mystery than a Victorian story of changes from a rural life to an industrial life.
The Humans Who Went Extinct: Why Neanderthals Died Out and We Survived is the other book I brought with me. It's well written and well paced. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It's surprising, and yet not, that climate changes had so much to do survival of all species. I think what was most surprising is the amount of climate change that occurred in Earth's early years. It makes our current climate change cycle "small change" for the Earth. The Earth has seen it all already and a lot worse.
That sounds like an important book Petra. My thought is that this cycle, unlike other climate changes, has been caused by human carelessness. We survived only to carry on with a new cycle of destruction.
Magdelanye, I agree....this is the only cycle where we are the cause. The positive part of that is, I guess (?), that the Earth will most likely be able to handle this climate change cycle and survive. The question would be, can we?
only if we mature enough to shift from an economy based on divide and conquer with war, but empathy and respect: and a new foundation of world peace. Otherwise, the future is for the robots
Sigh.....then the future is for the robots.....Which reminds me of a book.....have you read The Human Son? An interesting look at the future of Earth.
