This is a different setting for a mystery series, Fiji in 1914. The hero, Akal, is an Indian Sikh, who went to Hong Kong, where Sikhs were in demand as policemen. But after a case went wrong there, he was sent to the backwater of Fiji. He has made friends with one of his fellow workers, but the British establishment figures who run the police and government still see him as one more "coolie". The mystery itself was somewhat predictable but I would like to read more of the series, if it continues. At the moment this is the only volume.
