What did you think of the relationship dynamic of Connell and Marianne?

I think sally rooney gave it the title Normal people only to make the readers aware that the confusion in every relationship and the emotions that do not go too deep yet some how is a part of us and makes us who we are exists in everyone...Its not toxic , it is human mind not having enough comprehension to think clearly...

Horrible. So toxic and just god-awful. Wouldn't wish it on anybody.

Whilst the relationship with Connell and Marianne is frustrating and unhealthy as some of the other commenters have described, I think Rooney portrays how we all go through a relationship like this at least at one point in our lives. Their inability to communicate, and their reasons for be unable to effectively discuss how they're feeling are raw and real. I think Rooney captures the effects of grief, anxiety and depression on Connell well and in turns how this impacts the relationships around him, including the one with Marianne.

It's preeeetty goood

I loved their relationship as it seemed very authentic and thats portrayed so well in the show! the book however was boring and underwhelming

It is not a bad book, but maybe a bit overhyped? They could have avoided so many of their relationship issues if they just learned to communicate. It got frustrating because it felt repetitive after a certain point. Just tell each other how you feel! They never seemed to learn from their mistakes.

I really enjoyed the way it portrayed the Irish experience, and it really gave an outlet to show that maybe it doesn't just happen in other places; it can happen to anyone. I hate the miscommunication trope but it really fits with the environment they're in.

the ending sucks. everything else good

hated this book. felt like it was an endless loop

honestly, I started reading it, read 30-35 pages, and just could not make myself continue. so flat and stupid, and their conversations...

When I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down and finished it within 24 hours. Sally Rooney’s writing style is truly remarkable—her dialogues are sharp, authentic, and deeply engaging. The relationship between the main characters feels profoundly human. Not everyone knows how to communicate effectively or fully understand the impact of their past experiences. This inability—while it could resolve many of their conflicts—is exactly what drives the tension and emotional depth of the book.
