Yeah, this was an interesting idea handled very clunky,Much as I Iike RTD and Moffat they are hitting all their usual tropes with a hammer in the 'new era'.
Decent cast, but the writing let them down.
Ncuti is pretty solid, but he needed Ruby awake for the grand reveal speech to work.
If it had just been a two hander, the Doctor and Ruby and the landmine, this episode would have been okay. They were solid.
what was up with that kid?
Has Moffat met any children? She was so weirdly written.
'Everywhere is a beach, if you wait long enough.' may be my favorite line of the series, so far.
To end on a positive note.
Oh and a note for any reviewers out there: the jokey song and dance of 'is this season 1? Is it season 40?' has officially moved from amusing to 'I will slap you'.Same goes for 'let me compare what's going on now to the Chibnall era'.
It's not manditory and none of you have anything interesting to say past 'Whooo boy, that Chibnall stuff!
I think by the way I count the “seasons”, I’m up to 43 being the current season. And that’s not even if I were to start trying to include the audios from Big Finish. 😹 But I do t usually try to layer this system onto other people, it’s so arbitrary. The first major change is that I count the Tennant Specials after series 4 as a season, so Matt Smith's first series is season 32. Like I said it’s all very arbitrary. I’m always amused by how bent out of shape people get about this stuff. Same as with all the absurd arguments about the “correct” order to watch the Marvel films. As for Chibnall/Whittaker era? If all they’re going to do is complain, I’m not even going to bother listening or reading. Rather like my reaction to people who just dump on M Night Shyamalan’s The Village. They’re just too dense to the amazing commentary he’s making on raising children in a false reality bubble of lies and fabrications.
After I watch an episode there are a couple reviewers I check out and all three did both the 'what season is it...?' bit and the Chibnall reference.Neither one is interesting or adds anything to the conversation.
It's just lazy and annoying.
I don't care what series/season/era we are in, and I don't buy into the fan wisdom that I must be embarrassed by the Chibnall era.
Tell me about the episode I just watched.
A minor grumble: I don't like Ncuti having a different outfit every episode.I like my Doctor to have an outfit that they stick to, with the occasional change or minor alteration.
The outfit in Boom was kind of blah.
I think he’s going to the fashion horse Doctor, with at least one new outfit for each adventure. Actually I like it. Although the notion that he wears the same outfit all the time, does lend credibility to their clothes changing when they regenerate.

The outfits are just becoming 'Let's put a different colored shirt on Ncuti'.
I guess it makes cosplay easy.
Just wear any tight shirt to a con and say you are cosplaying as Ncuti's Doctor.
I'm still processing, but this story made my head hurt.
Anglican Marines? Wha? What is up with all the church stuff?
I got the message about the empty reasons for fighting a war. Loud and clear.
The little girl and her "daddy" made me whince. Do none of the kids in (England) DW say 'dad' or 'papa'?
I could deal Gatwa dressed in a kilt all the time like he was in the Christmas episode ... (And I don't normally say things like that ....) 😎

I mean … Travis wrote: "A minor grumble: I don't like Ncuti having a different outfit every episode. ..."I don’t think you can keep calling this a “minor grumble”, it sure doesn’t sound like it’s “minor” for you to me. 😼
NahI’ve gotten it out of my system and am edging towards acceptance
But, the outfits better be good
The one in boom was blah
A second viewing did nothing to improve on this story. I caught more of the nuances, but it's still a bit in your face.
Gatwa has a gorgeous singing voice. I want more.
The little girl runs the gamut of being a 5-6 years old to a pre-teen. Her characterization is so uneven and, honestly, annoying.

Yeah, the girl is really miscast. Either too old for the part, or took the lines in the completely wrong context. Anyway, this did work for me better this time through. It might be one that grows on me over time.

They needed her for the plot but had no idea what to do with her.

There’s a lot going on in here. Some of it is absolutely brilliant, some of it … not so much. The stuff that doesn’t work? It’s uneven. Parts are cheery and almost naive, others are dark and cynical. This could work brilliantly and there are moments that do, but only moments. That’s where the uneven works against it. I’m gonna put this down to actors being new to their characters and directors not quite grokking what needs to be conveyed. But the good stuff is working incredibly well. Nice use of a fairly small cast, some nice teases about a larger narrative. Nice script, perhaps just not as executed as well as it could have been.
