I read The Deathless Girls, which I had not planned for Shelf Bender, but it's still shelved as horror. It's not that scary if you're used to reading horror, but it was a great read. The story is told by Lil, 17-year-old twin to Kizzy. They are Travellers in Romania some centuries ago – the country is never mentioned, but it's easy to recognize. They end up being enslaved by the boyar's men, who had previously proceeded to burn their camp and kill everyone but the twins and several other kids. They start on a journey that will end... I won't say. I actually wanted to read the book because I knew it was a retelling, but I believe some people might not know what the original story is.
I really loved this book, a true page-turner!
I really liked Our Wives Under the Sea. It's not scary, unless you have a thing about submarines. It's a little creepy, but it's mostly about the relationshipbetween the two women. I'm excited that Julia Armfield has a new book coming out that looks great.
I read Siege and Storm (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy #2), which was on the paranormal sub-shelf. Not really horror, in my opinion, but that's my preference. And I do like Leigh Bardugo's books.
One for Sorrow: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn. Started at the end of June. Finished 7/3/24. This is a middle grade book that I hoped would be a better possible for not being so much horror. Instead I found that this old woman really did not like it for the bullying...on both sides of life. Still there is redemption. 4*.
