Winter (winter9) | 5017 comments This month we will be reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King

This book was nominated by M for our monthly theme Change.

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. Unless...

In 2011, Jake Epping, an English teacher from Lisbon Falls, Maine, sets out on an insane — and insanely possible — mission to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

Leaving behind a world of computers and mobile phones, he goes back to a time of big American cars and diners, of Lindy Hopping, the sound of Elvis, and the taste of root beer.

In this haunting world, Jake falls in love with Sadie, a beautiful high school librarian. And, as the ominous date of 11/22/63 approaches, he encounters a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald...

M | 346 comments I had intended to read just the first chapter. Just a little teaser before we all get started...
Next thing I knew, it was dark outside, my neck hurt and I realized I was 120 pages in and INVESTED. Lol.
Immediately hooked.
I only stopped because I had to go to work in the morning, haha.

I'm a big fan of classic King, and not read a thing of his in the last 10 years. I recently read Fairy Tale and was not a fan so I'm really looking forward to getting into something a little older :)

Jen Well-Steered (well-steered) My neighbours moved away and gave me this book because I knew it was coming up. They were heavy smokers. It's been sitting on my shelf for over a month. I opened it up today and phew! But otherwise I'm looking forward to it.

That's funny. That might have been my excuse to buy another copy!

The smell dissipates, but goodness I'm glad I've never smoked

Dorothy (vilette) | 267 comments This reminded me of moving into our house 30 years ago. The previous owners were heavy smokers and the walls were all yellowed by nicotine. We have a small barometer and as we were wondering where to put it, we noticed a barometer shape on the wall in the hall. Clearly it had not gone yellow like the rest of the house so that is where the barometer still hangs.

Jen Well-Steered (well-steered) It's definitely one of the first things the narrator notices in the past as well, just how smelly the 1950s were, and how everybody's smoking everywhere. My grandparents were pack a day smokers well into the 90s, and their house was also just permeated with it.
