Hurray for Dawn; I read for pleasure; no one has to coerce me into reading a book, and if I begin a book and do not like it, I cease to read it and move on to something else. I have just finished Dawn Kopman Whidden’s book, Stolen and have given it a 5* rating as it fulfilled my expectations for a book – it entertained me, left an impression on me, and gave me pleasure to read it.I loved her characters; the strapping handsome family of male police officers with Marty in the lead. Jean, the menopausal, slightly cranky female officer, and the frightened, anxious, and understandably spooky little Tristan. As a qualified social worker, the story line appealed to me and I was right there with the adults as they raced to work out just what on earth was going on with these children. Tristan’s behaviour accurately reflected the behaviour of some of the more challenging children I have come across and I was right there with Hope and the others as they tried to placate him. I liked the confusion between Tristan and Michaelah – one dirty and neglected, and one clean and well presented. How come? Dawn kept me right there until I discovered all the answers.
Dawn tackles a difficult topic, and one, which must be every parent’s worst nightmare - the abduction of a child by a sex offender. What I did not see coming was the fact that Troy and Shane had also been kidnapped as children. That was a great twist; I did realise however that one of them was probably going to turn out to be the missing little boy from Marty’s past, T.J. and was delighted when it turned out that way. I like happy endings!
The finale was, in my opinion, worthy of an episode of Criminal Minds or CSI, with Dawn bringing it neatly together in a riveting climax.
Thanks to Dawn for the download and good luck for the next book.
