Journey to the End of the World: Patagonia
Adventure ContinuedDay 6: Tierra del Fuego

The southern end of the continent is known by the name of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire), which was given to the area in 1520 by Ferdinand Magellan, the first European to reach this latitude. The name was due to the presence of the many fires lit by the local population to keep warm, although the Portuguese navigator feared that they were preparing an ambush against his ship. The southernmost national park in the world was created here in 1960, which bears the same name as the region. It is a coastal park in an archipelago, so fishing and kayaking are among the favorite activities in summer. Many reach the park from nearby Ushuaia on the tourist train known as El Tren del Fin de Mundo (End of the World train).
*Read a book with all the letters in FIRE in its title (any order) OR read a book that ends a series (share series name).

The city of Ushuaia is considered one of the southernmost cities in the world together with the Chilean Punta Arenas. It was once a penal colony, but was practically rebuilt from scratch starting in 1948. Today it is a well-known tourist resort, featuring incredible natural beauty and an exciting night life scene. In addition to some local monuments and the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park, several cruises depart from its port that move between the islands that make up the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago. The more adventurous can embark on one of the ships that allow you to visit Antarctica.
*Read a book where a cruise take place (briefly share details) OR read a book with a title that starts with a letter in USHUAIA (disregard A, AN, The).
Day 7: Cape Horn

Cape Horn is the southernmost point of the continent and is located in Chile on the rocky headland of Hornos Island, which is part of Tierra del Fuego Archipelago. The horn was rounded by a European ship for the first time on January 26, 1616. It is a very difficult and dangerous journey, so most ships prefer to pass through the Strait of Magellan. In 1946, Chile established the Cape Horn National Park, which together with the nearby Alberto de Agostino National Park, was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2005.
*Read a book set on an island (tell us where) OR read a book published in January (any year; share pub date).

Founded in 1848, Punta Arenas competes with Ushuaia for the title of southernmost city in the world. So as not to do anyone an injustice, let's visit them both. Farming and mining are the main economic activities of this city, but tourism is increasingly gaining ground as another source of income, favored by its proximity to several natural parks. The nearby Los Pinguinos Natural Monument is definitely worth a visit. Created to protect the Magellanic Penguin colony, it is one of the best places for sighting penguins in Patagonia.
*Read a book that has a cardinal point in its title (north, south, etc. - variations accepted) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in PUNTA ARENAS.
Day 8: Chilean Patagonia

The southern Chilean coast is very rugged and, as already mentioned, full of islands. But it is possible to travel it by car, although it is often necessary to use ferries. Even in Chile there is a road that enjoys a certain tourist charm: Carretera Austral or Ruta 7. Commissioned by the dictator Pinochet, this road travels 1,240 km (770 mi) from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins, passing through rural Patagonia. Even though many sections of the road are still unpaved, it is worth the inconvenience to see the area's forests, fjords, glaciers, and steep mountains. There are future plans to extend the road to the southernmost region of the nation.
*Read a read a book with a title that includes BOTH a word starting with C and one starting with A (disregard A, An or The) OR read a book that was difficult to finish but worth the challenge (tell us why for both difficulty and reward).

Aside from the abundant marine wildlife, other animals can be spotted during a trip to this area. The guanaco moves around the region in more or less large flocks and it is possible to spot this camelid from sea level up to 4,660 m (15,233 ft) above sea level. With a lot of luck you will be able to see a condor circling, which has risked becoming extinct, or the Patagonian fox, a canid that had once been domesticated by the indigenous population of Tierra del Fuego. Even though the domesticated breed became extinct in 1919, the wild population is still intact.
*Read a book with an MC that works with or owns an animal (tell us which) OR read a book tagged ANIMAL or NATURE on its GR homepage.
Day 9: Chilean National Parks

Chilean Patagonia is full of protected areas and since the Andes reach the ocean here, these parks are both coastal and mountainous. The Torres del Paine National Park is one of the largest in the country and the most famous. Created in 1959, it has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1978. Its main attraction are the granite monoliths of the same name, but the park is also rich in lakes, rivers and glaciers. It is perhaps the most popular trekking destination in Chile, with its W Trek being the most famous, taking 4-5 days to complete. Despite the entrance fee being very expensive, a trip to Patagonia would be incomplete without visiting this beautiful national park.
*Read a book where the characters take a hike (briefly share details) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK (three word min).

Bernardo O'Higgins National Park is the largest of Chile's protected areas and owes its name to the first Chilean head of state. It protects the coastal area and fjords of the Andean cordillera, but due to its remote location, it can only be reached by helicopter or boat. The least expensive way to visit it is to take the 3-day ferry from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt. During this trip, in addition to the majestic landscape, it is easy to spot whales, seals and dolphins. The park is also home to the Pio XI Glacier, the largest in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica.
*Read a book set in a national park or protected area (tell us where) OR read a book where an historical personage is mentioned (share text).
Day 10: Chiloé

During a trip to Chilean Patagonia it is worth going a little further north to visit the Chiloé Archipelago, and more specifically the island that gives it its name. A portion of Chiloé Island is protected by a national park of the same name, created in 1982 to protect the particular temperate forest that covers parts of Chile and Argentina. Another curiosity of this archipelago is the cultivation of potatoes, which date back to before the 16th century. There are 240 different varieties of potatoes native to this area! In 2010 the Food and Agriculture Organization designated Chiloé to be part of the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems, a certification given to places where traditional agriculture is integrated into local culture, food security, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
*Read a book where agriculture is an important theme (set on farm; farm-to-fork restaurant; or similar) OR read a book where the MC's first name starts with a letter in POTATO (share name).

The archipelago is also known for its wooden churches, built over three centuries. Many of them have been lost, but UNESCO decided in 2000 to protect 16 of those that had been preserved by including them in the list of world heritage sites. All these churches have a common basic structure: they are built on stone foundations, with a rectangular shape and a gable roof, an arched front porch and a bell tower at the top. The interior with three naves is richly decorated and the roof of the central nave usually resembles the bottom of a boat.
*Read a book where a church is important to the plot (briefly share why) OR read a series book #1, #6, or #16.

EXPLORER
0 / 15 tasks completed
0 / 10 days traveled
Day 1: Preparation for the Trip
Patagonia owes its name to the Patagonians, the name given to its inhabitants by the first European who saw its coasts: Ferdinand Magellan in 1520. Expeditions into the area were not organized until the late 18th century, with the most famous being Charles Darwin's voyage on the HMS Beagle.
*Read a book tagged TRAVEL or ADVENTURE on its GR homepage (bonus if it is about Patagonia) OR read a book with a character who is a writer (tell us who).
Contrary to what is commonly believed, the climate in Patagonia is not extremely harsh. Above all, we must keep in mind that the wind is often the protagonist in this region. That said, the best season to visit is summer, taking into account that many walking routes are only open from December to February.
*Read a book with a title that includes all the letters in WIND (any order) OR read a book set between December and February (tell us when).
Day 2: Valdés Peninsula
The Valdés Peninsula is an important nature reserve and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The nearest town is Puerto Madryn, about 50 km (31 mi) away. It is possible to book an organized tour here, which is the best way to visit the area.
*Read a book for which you had to pay full price (no discounts, sorry!) OR read a book with a title that starts with a letter in VALDES (disregard A, AN, The).
The coast is inhabited by marine mammals (seal, sea lion, elephant seal), while inland it is possible to spot rheas (South American ostrich), guanacos (camelid related to the llama), and maras (rabbit-like animal). A very interesting activity to do between May and December is whale watching.
*Read a book with a wild animal on the cover (post cover) OR read a book that inspired you to look up information to learn more about something mentioned in the book (tell us what).
Day 3: Bariloche and Ruta 40
The largest and best known city in Patagonia is Bariloche. Founded by Italian immigrants in 1895, it stands at the foot of the Andes and is a well-known ski resort. The city is also famous for the production of chocolate!
*Read a book with a character who was an immigrant or one of Italian descent (tell us who) OR read a book where someone eats chocolate (share text).
The famous Ruta 40 passes through Bariloche. This road, paved only since 2004, has itself become a tourist destination and is considered an adventure tourist itinerary.
*Read a book with the number 4 AND 0 in its page count (share page count) OR read a book with a road trip in it (briefly share details).
Day 4: The Andean National Parks in Argentina
In the Andean region of Argentina there are at least two national parks that must be visited. The first is that of Los Alerces, established in 1937 to protect the fitzroya cupressoides, one of the longest-living trees on our planet. It has been a World Heritage Site since 2017 and is considered one of the most beautiful parks in the nation.
*Read a book with a tree(s) or body of water on the cover (post cover) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in LOS ALERCES.
The Los Glaciares National Park was also established in 1937, while it became a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1981. This is where the most famous glacier, Perito Moreno, ends its journey. This great wall of ice is one of the few glaciers in the world that is still advancing, rather than retreating.
*Read a series book # 4 or # 7 OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in LOS GLACIER NATIONAL PARK (three word min).
Day 5: A Journey into Prehistory
Since 1980, fossils of the largest dinosaurs that ever existed have been found in Patagonia, as well as other gigantic creatures that lived in the Jurassic period, such as birds and ancestors of today's crocodiles. One of these creatures has actually been given the name of Argentinosaurus!
*Read a large book (400+ pages; share page count) OR read a book where the MC's first name starts with a letter in FOSSIL.
It appears that humans have inhabited this region for nearly 13,000 years. One of the most spectacular evidence of this is the Cueva de las Manos (Cave of the Hands). It is a cave in which paintings of hundreds of hands (most being left hands) were found on the walls, dating back 8,000 years ago.
* Read a book set in an isolated location (tell us where) OR read a book with over 8,000 ratings on its GR Homepage (share number at time of reading).
Day 6: Tierra del Fuego
The southern end of the continent is known by the name of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire), which was given to the area in 1520 by Ferdinand Magellan, the first European to reach this latitude. The name was due to the presence of the many fires lit by the local population to keep warm, although the Portuguese navigator feared that they were preparing an ambush against his ship.
*Read a book set on an island (tell us where) OR read a book published in January (any year; share pub date).
Founded in 1848, Punta Arenas competes with Ushuaia for the title of southernmost city in the world. Farming and mining are the main economic activities of this city, but tourism is increasingly gaining ground as another source of income, favored by its proximity to several natural parks.
*Read a book that has a cardinal point in its title (north, south, etc. - variations accepted) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in PUNTA ARENAS.
Day 8: Chilean Patagonia
The southern Chilean coast is very rugged and full of islands. But it is possible to travel it by car, although it is often necessary to use ferries.
*Read a book set in a national park or protected area (tell us where) OR read a book where an historical personage is mentioned (share text).
Day 10: Chiloé
During a trip to Chilean Patagonia it is worth going a little further north to visit the Chiloé Archipelago. A portion of Chiloé Island is protected by a national park of the same name, created in 1982 to protect the particular temperate forest that covers parts of Chile and Argentina. Another curiosity of this archipelago is the cultivation of potatoes, which date back to before the 16th century.
*Read a book where a church is important to the plot (briefly share why) OR read a series book #1, #6, or #16.

Difficult because I had to read a copy in a digital archive, and I don't like reading on my computer. Rewarding because these poems were written in the very early 1700s, and some of them are wonderful! Many also show what a keen mind and what insight she had. Well worth taking months to get through.

Let's explore the end of the world with Patrizia!
Patagonia is the region that covers the southern tip of South America and is divided between two countries, Argentina and Chile. It is a sparsely inhabited area, but rich in natural attractions that has attracted many travelers and tourists for many decades.

But today's notoriety is really due to the travel reports of two great men of letters: Bruce Chatwin (his In Patagonia is still a point of reference for many travelers) and Luis Sepulveda (I got to know this region thanks to his Patagonia Express). Before leaving, it is worth reading one of these two books or one of the many other travel books published over the years.
It is possible to visit Patagonia independently, but the trip must be carefully planned due to the scarcity of places to visit, tourist or otherwise. Below I will indicate, in no particular order, some of the unmissable destinations. Finally, one thing you absolutely must do is eat the excellent Argentine cuisine, particularly their beef.
The terrain is arid and features several salt lakes, the largest of which is located at an altitude of about 40 meters (131 ft) below sea level. To visit the reserve you must pay a daily entrance fee.
In this period the southern right whale comes to this area to give birth. Along the coast it is also possible to see the fearsome killer whales. If you have had the opportunity to see at least one documentary filmed here, you will know what to expect and will be looking forward to visiting this location!
*Read a book with a wild animal on the cover (post cover) OR read a book that inspired you to look up information to learn more about something mentioned in the book (tell us what).
Day 3: Bariloche and Ruta 40
The largest and best known city in Patagonia is Bariloche (to be precise: San Carlos de Bariloche). Founded by Italian immigrants in 1895, it stands at the foot of the Andes and is a well-known ski resort. From here it is possible to leave for mountaineering or trekking expeditions in the surrounding mountains. The city is also famous for the production of chocolate! Perhaps it is worth trying it after a tiring day of travel or trekking, what do you think?
*Read a book with a character who was an immigrant or one of Italian descent (tell us who) OR read a book where someone eats chocolate (share text).
The famous Ruta 40 passes through Bariloche. This road, paved only since 2004, has itself become a tourist destination and is considered an adventure tourist itinerary. It is one of the longest roads in the world and connects the southern end of Patagonia with the northern border between Argentina and Bolivia, running parallel to the Andes mountain range. By traveling along it, in fact, it is possible to reach many of the major attractions offered by Argentina, including 20 national parks.
This is perhaps due to its complex water system, which makes it rich in lakes, rivers and streams. Among the easiest animals to spot here is the Andean deer.
*Read a book with a tree(s) or body of water on the cover (post cover) OR read a book whose author's first and last initial can be found in LOS ALERCES.
The Los Glaciares National Park was also established in 1937, while it became a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1981. It owes its name to the presence of 47 large glaciers. It is also home to towering mountains and numerous glacial lakes, including Lake Argentino, the largest in the nation.
In addition to these fossils, petrified forests have also been discovered. Just south of Gaiman, 600 acres of badlands make up the Bryn Gwyn Paleontological Park, which features both excavation sites and petrified forests. This "outdoor museum" is a branch of the MEF Paleontological Museum of Trelew, where a fossil trail, remarkable displays, and botanical gardens await.
Archaeologists believed the drawings were made by spraying color over the left hand of the painter using bone-made pipes held in their right hand. The cave is located in a very isolated canyon, as the main road is about 100 km (62 mi) away, but it is definitely worth the trip. Since 1999 it has been one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
* Read a book set in an isolated location (tell us where) OR read a book with over 8,000 ratings on its GR Homepage (share number at time of reading).
