WEEKLY CHECK-IN
May 27, 2024 -- Week 22

It's our final week of May and we're starting week 22/52!

Did you complete the May mini-challenge? Share your three book choices below and tell us which one you enjoyed the most!

Kathi | 179 comments I haven’t made up my mind for sure, but I have options:
M: Undercover by Tamsyn Muir
A: going to use a first book of a series but haven’t decided which
Y: either What the Dead Know by Nghi Vo or Where the Desert Meets the Sea by Werner Sonne

I’ve started 3 series and like the first book of each, so one of those would be my favorite.

message 4: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 60 comments Finished up the mini challenge last week. Here's what I read:

M - Feed Them Silence by Lee Mandelo
A - The Husbands by Holly Gramazio
Y - When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill

My favorite was definitely When We Lost Our Heads.

BTW, it’s May 27, not March. Oops! 😁

message 6: by Michele (new)

Michele Olson | 551 comments M -- Murder as a Fine Art by David Morrell
A -- Low Midnight by Carrie Vaughn
Y -- Why Kings Confess by C.S. Harris

I think my favorite was Low Midnight, because even though it's in the middle of the Kitty Norville series, it was told from Cormac's perspective, and views Kitty in a different light.

message 7: by Haley (new)

Haley Did not really get around to them.

I guess I could count Villains Are Destined to Die, Vol. 6 as my Alpha - the Crowned Prince fits that personality to a T. I finished the book in May, but had started it back at the end of April.

Other than that, I've got nothing.

message 8: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (Nerdish.Maddog) (nerdishmaddog) | 72 comments M-Every Time I Go on Vacation, Someone Dies
A- The Dangerous Ones
Y- When Among Crows

I really liked all of them and don't know if i could choose a favorite because the all fulfill different reading needs. Humor-Everytime, Romance (YA)- Dangerous, Action- Crows.

message 9: by Denise (new)

Denise | 569 comments I did 2 of the 3, and cheated on one.

A: This Impossible Brightness (uses radio communication throughout)

Y: If Cats Disappeared from the World (it has an implied "What" in front of If, hence...cheating)

I liked the second book, have mixed feelings about the first

message 10: by Lucilla (new)

Lucilla | 144 comments I completed all three:
M: The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip
A: In the Shadow of Demeter by Vic Malachi
Y: The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsukawa

The Forgotten Beasts of Eld was my favorite of the three, although In the Shadow of Demeter was a close second.

Hilde Helseth | 256 comments I have only completed one so far,

M - Jakten på Sigurd Jorsalfare by Øystein Morten

but there is still 3 more days left of May, so I am aiming to finish

A - A is for Arsenic: The Poisons of Agatha Christie by Kathryn Harkup

too.

I like both, but I am keeping 'Jakten på Sigurd Jorsalfare' since I have two more books by the author where he tracks down two other Norwegian kings, Olav den hellige (St Olav) and Olav Tryggvason.

message 12: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 17 comments Hi Hilde!
i am a direct descendant of Saint King Olav and proud to be. I'll have to find this book. I hope it's published in English! Do you have the translation of the title in English so I know what to look for?
Thank you in advance,
Carolyn

message 13: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 17 comments I completed the May mini-challenge:
M - Homecoming by Kate Morton
A - Alpha Bette by Jennifer Manocherian
Y - Where or When by Anita Shreve
Even though Kate Morton is one of my favorite authors, and Alpha Bette was well-written, my favorite was hands-down Where or When. Oh my gosh, I couldn't put it down and it nearly knocked my socks off.
Carolyn

message 14: by Emily (new)

Emily Levy (eklevy) | 1 comments M- My Favorite Terrible Thing by Madeleine Henry
A- Alpha’s Forbidden Fate by Kelsey Kent
Y- Where the Desert Meets the Sea by Werner Sonne

I think the last was my favorite, although I also enjoyed the first. The middle one not so much.

Sorry, as far as I now the book is only translated to Icelandic.

I checked with Amazon, and the only one I found there was a German edition of Eirik Raude, the father of Leiv Erikson

message 16: by Renee (new)

Renee Hoile | 89 comments I'm so thrilled! Reading and completing 7 books in one month is a record for me. Yahoo!!!

message 17: by DaNae (new)

DaNae | 95 comments I adore the mini-challenges. I can usually cross-pollinate with the other three challenges I'm running for myself. I really hate when I can't match a book to a prompt, so I'm enjoying the extra connections. 🐝

For May:

M for last letter: The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store

A Is For Alpha: The Mysterious Affair at Styles First Book by an Author. I'm trying to squeeze in as much Agatha as possible.

Interrogative Word In The Title: The Cat who Saved Books
