She may have been a bit more protective of Brooke than she would have for a stranger, but I think she would have taken much the same actions to protect any victim who came under her protection. In the same situation, I would have done everything possible to protect my niece until I could find out exactly what happened and what we had to deal with.
Sam was being an Aunt first, cop second. She wanted to make sure she was the first person that asked Brooke any questions. She didn't want any other detectives asking Brooke questions which may lead her into a heap of trouble. I don't think she was out of line by how she handled Brooke's case. She made sure Brooke was medically evaluated and that a rape kit was done, just like she would any victim.
Sam was going to protect Brooke no matter how bad it looked, and I would have done the same in her shoes. Until Sam had a better handle on what happened, she was not going to let Brooke be questioned by anyone else.
I agree with everyone. Sam was acting as her aunt first. She didn't want anyone to get to Brooke before Sam had all the facts. As much as I hate Sam going rogue, I agreed with her in this case.
Sam was understandably acting like an aunt first and ensuring her niece's physical safety was her top priority. My problem came later with her not being honest with the brass and not recusing herself due to the conflict of interest. Sam had no business being involved in any way with this investigation. Totally unprofessional.
