I never read Othello in school and frankly, it doesn't matter how much of a literary genius Shakespeare was, I just don't enjoy his writing. For some reason I find the 17th Century English language difficult to follow. I listened so some of it in audio, which actually helped me understand the writing style a bit more.

Othello is a general in the service of Venice. He is a Moor, a black man of North African roots, who falls madly in love with Desdemona. Iago is Othello's friend, but then Othello promotes Michael Cassio to the position of personal lieutenant, Iago is incredibly jealous. Iago begins an evil and malicious campaign against Othello.

Othello is a classic Shakespeare tragic hero, a virtuous character who is destined for a downfall because of his tragic flaw, or weakness.
It’s among Shakespeare’s more popular works. It’s a simple story, but features richly developed characters. Othello is considered to be one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, and its themes of jealousy, betrayal, racism, and love continue to resonate with audiences today.
