Teddie (teddieg) | 176 comments Hi Team! I love meeting new people and getting new book suggestions with fun GR challenges like this - I always end up reading a book for a task that I probably wouldn't have picked up or known about otherwise.

I know I've played on teams with Stacey and Susan before - Hi again!
Look forward to meeting you Krissy and Ariane :)

I read a bit of everything but especially like fantasy, sci fi, and mysteries.

Please introduce yourselves, and if you have any ideas re: a team name, throw those in!

Ariane | 207 comments Hi team! And captain ;)
I love challenges like this!
I mostly read fantasy, sci fi and mysteries too, although I read a bit of everything.
I am in Belgium and sorry if I make mistakes, English is not my first language
I'll browse my TBR to find the book, because it is only one book a week, right?

message 7: by Stacey (last edited Jun 09, 2024 06:11AM) (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 557 comments Hi Teddie! Thanks for captaining us late arrivals. :)

Hello Team! I'm horrible at team names, so I'll leave that up to the more creative of us. I'm in North Carolina, and lean heavily towards romance in my reading, but am happy to read just about anything except cozy mysteries and high fantasy.

I have a book planned that fits about 4 tasks -- should I just pick which ones I want or should we decide which ones we think might be the highest point getters before I post?

And question on the buddy read thing -- can it be just within the team as long as we start a thread? Or does it have to be a group wide buddy read? ETA -- Actually there is one already started for the book I was going to read. Now I'm wondering if I should pick a different book?

message 8: by Ariane (new)

Ariane | 207 comments Hi Stacey! what is the book you wanted to read and what tasks does it fit? In case someone wants to buddy read it
I can find a book for tasks 6, 7 and 22. Unfortunately, it is in French so I guess no buddy read :)

message 9: by Teddie (last edited Jun 09, 2024 08:25AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 176 comments Hi Ladies!

Stacey, re: the Buddy Reads: if you want to read a book for a Group Buddy Read, you can do so without anyone else on our team joining. Otherwise, we can create a Team Buddy Reads each week for a book - or 2 I suppose, as long as there are 2 people from our team per book. (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...)

Which book are you looking at? Maybe there is an English translation? :)

message 11: by Teddie (last edited Jun 09, 2024 08:34AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 176 comments I like the idea of trying to get the highest points, basing guess on which tasks we think are the trickiest.. hmm

I guess if I were to pick the top 5 tricky (or most specific) tasks, they would be:
6. 3 Ps in the Title
10. Set in Italy or with Italian character
14. MC is First Responder
18. MC is an immigrant
26. Person's first name in the title

Next 5 would be:
1. Scene happens at a beach
15. Fruit on cover or in title
13. Illustrations or drawing in it
16. First Pub 10 years ago (2014)
24. Hat on the cover

I'd put the list on there, but it's got over 1000 books so...

but who knows really. Maybe a good rule per week would be to make sure your book hits 2 tasks. And maybe we try to have a weekly Buddy Read if no one is reading for a Group BR that week?

Also, I made a tracking sheet for us, but if anyone would rather just post to the thread, that's ok too (I'll just update the ss.) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

message 12: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 176 comments Ok, looking at the original GISH tasks, and know that is who's setting the difficulty points, (vs the challenge book task)
... wearing a beret made of raspberries while shopping in a secondhand store - practical if you get hungry while shopping.
... the wombat poop one might be tricky - LOL.

message 13: by Krissy (new)

Krissy (krissystewart) | 3693 comments Hi team! I am Krissy. I'm excited to play. I have been participating in team challenges on GR for about 14+ years now but I've never played this one before! I'm currently playing 4 at the moment. This will be 5. I prefer audiobooks since I can listen at work. I read everything except anything overly religious or political. My go to is MM romance and my second go to is mystery/thriller. But I'll read from any genre.

I will sit down later today to read over the tasks in more detail

message 14: by Stacey (last edited Jun 09, 2024 12:36PM) (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 557 comments Sorry, everyone -- notifications weren't working for this thread.

I was looking at Heartless (Chestnut Springs, #2) by Elsie Silver which works for Hat on the cover, spicy, 3 in the page count, read when I was younger, MC under 30 and paperback. There is a BR already set up for 2 other readers -- but I wasn't sure if I could just hop into that?

I doubt it, it is on KU, I guess self published: Loup, Gargouille & Prophéties (Le Monde de Draven Vixen)
It has the 3P's, which is, to me, one of the trickiest.

message 16: by Teddie (last edited Jun 09, 2024 03:47PM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 176 comments Hi Krissy!

Stacey - if you see a Buddy Read already there, you can join it - just add the link to the tracking sheet (or post if you prefer.)

Ariane, I agree that the 3P in the title is one of the tougher challenge tasks - the corresponding GISH task (where the difficulty points are assigned) is: 6. Re-enact the experience of your birth, using only shadow puppets.

I would say you want to read the book and can find another weekly task that it works for - go for it! :)

I'm looking at:
8 Lives of a Century-Old Trickster by Mirinae Lee
just came off hold, and will work for
7. MC is Grandparent OR under 30
18. MC is an immigrant

or

The Crystal Cave (Arthurian Saga, #1) by Mary Stewart
3. All letters of ART in the Author's Name
25. BOOKS THAT WON'T WASTE YOUR TIME list (#160)

Susan (jazzescrapper) | 121 comments Hi there, I'm Susan and I lived in Las Vegas, NV my whole life and then packed up and moved to Reno, NV a year ago. I've been married for 38 years and we have 7 kids (6 boys and 1 girl) we also have 12 grandkids.

I've been on Goodreads for 16 years (I had to look it up but I knew I've been on for a long time) I have been a long time addict to challenges. Challenges have helped me expand my love of different genres.

I love fantasy, mystery/thriller and rom-com. I also like sci-fi that doesn't go over my head.

I'm really excited for this challenge

Hi Susan!

You can read for any task regardless of what others are the team are reading. Try for a book that hits 2 tasks (max per book.) You can also join an existing Buddy Read or do a BR with at least 1 other team member.

Susan (jazzescrapper) | 121 comments Tomorrow I'm starting Grumpy Next Door Firefighter by Blair Brown

It will cover the #14 First Responder prompt

Krissy: Worry - 2 tasks
Stacey: Heartless - 2 tasks - BUDDY READ
Susan: Grumpy Next Door Firefighter - 2 tasks
Teddie: The Crystal Cave - 2 tasks

I've filled in the basics on our tracking sheet

Sounds good! You can pick the two tasks you think might get the most difficulty points (anyone's guess though) - tasks can be repeated across the team.

Just 1 book per team member per week. We'll have a little more time to plan for next round - perhaps a couple of us can settle on a good buddy read book to do :)

I'm also looking at Hexed for the 45. tattoo and 47. starts with H -- its #2 in the series, but wouldn't be hard to read without reading #1 - standalone plots with background / character continuation.

We are all checked in for Week 1 - next we'll see how we do for points.

We can't start week 2 books until Monday - here are the current contenders for a team Buddy Read next week.

Here's where other Buddy Reads are going - totally cool to join one of these as well.

Do you know when the points will be added to our tasks?

One Dark Window looks good - I added that to my tbr.

@Ariane - I'm up for doing A Great and Terrible Beauty Buddy Read if you still want to read it this week?
