Chapter Breakdown
Guidance for DQ setters
Aim for a reasonable number of questions: 4 - 5 is typical. Please don't post too many - any more than 7 gets unwieldy!
Use consecutive numbering of the DQs for your days. So, for example, if Day One is posted as questions 1-4, Day Two should start at number 5 etc.
Don't worry too much about your questions: you aren't being tested on how clever your questions are!
Hints and tips:
- Is there a quote that jumped out at you? Use that in a question.
- What about the characters - do they generate strong feelings? No feelings? - either way, we can explore that!
- What about that plot twist?!
- Explore the writing style: is there an unusual structure being used? what's the tone of voice like? or the point of view?

District 1 here. If anyone else from my team volunteers, I would prefer to let them get a chance. So back-up DQs please.
District 1 here, but backup please, as I'm having surgery then and can't guarantee I can keep up that week!
Volunteering from District 1I will be the primary - if anyone else volunteers for our team, we will hash out who actually get the DQs. 😃
(Would it be possible to get a weekend day, if D1 is chosen...please?)
I would like to use a token for an extra entry, please.(Also, would it be possible to get a weekend day, if D1 is chosen...please?)
I’ve already signed up but would like to use an extra token please! District 9 Also if I get picked and it’s possible could I have the last day?

Thanks so much!
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-7 1. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
4. Enter Evar in Chapter 4 and the scene changes from the barren Dust to the mysterious and atmospheric library and its Mechanism. A lot of information to absorb about how it all works and the role of Evar and his "family". Does the author do a good job in getting across what the library is and does? Is it good, evil or omnipotent?
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?

I don't really have a local library but I do have a library card from Vienna. I could spend literal hours there but honestly haven't been in forever; I just barely go to Vienna anymore at this point 🥲 I've also been to the National Library in Vienna which is absolutely STUNNING and I don't know about it being 'famous' lol but I've been to the library in Stuttgart which is modern and quite fun! I loved it there honestly.

So far I definitely find her POV more interesting even though we don't know much about her or Evar yet and I guess the libary would be more interesting to most people but so far I just find it confusing hah.
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
I have a feeling I'll have to start focussing more on these!!!
As I said above, life in the library confuses me so far. And I'm sure we haven't been given all the information yet, like there's so much more to learn!!! But honestly I just dread it at this point; there's so much going on in my private life currently that I don't think I'll be able to fully grasp what's happening in this book and what it all means and so on, sigh.
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
I feel like this will probably be the main focus of the book?? Because why else would this lil message have been dropped. And we've heard about this one 'kid' who's disappeared in the library so I assume the message is from him.
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-71. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
I virtually visit my local library almost daily. Sadly, I haven’t visited it in person since before covid brought everything to a halt. I haven’t visited any famous libraries either.
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
My impression of Livira is that she is one smart cookie!! And, that she is very resilient and adapts to her surroundings. Because of that, I think she will work to find a way to favorably impact her future regardless of where or what it may be.
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
Oddly enough, I usually pay close attention to the chapter headings and look to find the title in the text in some way. In this first section of the book, I’ve been very lax and haven’t really paid attention at all! I went back and reread them. I originally was thinking they were just quotes (which I found interesting) and not really chapter headings; now your question makes me wonder. They are a bit cryptic, if you read them in context with the story. Curious to see how they play out.
I found it a little hard to follow and a little confusing. Now, I think I will go back and reread those first chapters so that I’m not lost throughout the book.
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
I think it will have a major impact on Evar. First, the book that it was written in was in a language that he didn’t know but he was able to read it. Second, it was addressed to him and seemly by someone he doesn’t know (new language and all). I suspect it was a future version of Livira that was writing him the note before she was interrupted by something. Honestly, that was a guess because there is supposed to be time travel in the book!
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-7 Cat District 71. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
I absolutely love this cover, It's gorgeous. I use my library often. I do prefer using Libby but often a physical book is faster than electronic. I have not been to other Libraries but would love to start.
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
Livira seems like a strong person. She has lived a hard life, yearning for more. I think the first attacks didn't affect her as much was because she felt deep down there would be more anywhere else than her home.
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
I actually dislike the headings. I feel they take away from the story, makes it confusing on Audio as well.
Wow talk about a right corner with whiplash. I read part of it and went back over with audio. I'm not exactly sure the where or when but I feel it could be a portal of some kind but we will find out soon, hopefully.
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
I was thinking it was written by the missing boy, Mayland, and then I thought maybe It's the assistant and I'm guessing after reading chapter 7. The assistant is a-she and possibly that is Livira. Maybe stuck somewhere and needs rescuing?
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-71. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
visit the local library here most weeks, especially when they have one of my reservations in
Have visited the Long Room in the Old Library in Trinity College, Dublin

2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny. !
Livira’s key characteristic at this point is boundless curiosity, facilitated by a seeming fearlessness
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story? !
I’m enjoying them at this point, seem related to but distortions of books we would be familiar with
I think we get just enough detail about the library to intrigue us and keep us going, it is good to maintain the mystery
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward? !
His destiny?
Going to guess this is central to the plot
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-71. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
I don't go in person much anymore. I need to. I loved going to the Library of Congress, down near the children's area. The smell of books....
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
Livira seems strong and resilient but maybe a bit too headstrong. She sometimes acts before she thinks.
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
I'm listening. My chapters just titles Evar or Livira at this point. What am I missing out on?
I don't feel like I have enough information to answer this yet. We know some but I feel like there is a lot missing.
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
I think it will be a huge part of the plot. No idea who. Only guess right now would be Livira but that isn't really an informed guess.
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-71. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
I am fond of my local library, but don't visit it too often. It is cool though, being built on top of an archaeological dig. So there's skeletons and old church remains on display there. I do borrow books, as I use Libby quite a bit, but there is something about the atmosphere of libraries that I love. I've been to Deichman in Oslo, that one is a bit famous I think. It's big at least!
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
She is certainly an acting protagonist. She creates action, has rarely been passive, which makes her story more interesting. That said, she seems a bit too headstrong and wild for her own good! I think I'd find her annoying if I had to look after her for any length of time, much like the soldiers.
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
Cryptic. I am trying to pay attention to them, as I think they hold clues or easter eggs, if nothing else. I think it'd be interesting to revisit them after finishing the book(s).
I think so far it seems intriguing and secretive. I assume more will be revealed in time, but I don't trust it to have the best interests of people in "mind".
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
I think it will be important for Evar and his story. He's just been moping around that library of his. I think finding this book and the message is his inciting event, something to kickstart his journey. And obviously it's a central mystery to the book. As to who wrote it, time will tell I hope!
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-71. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
Got this book from my local library and how often I visit depends on the book I am looking to read. I have a kindle but wont pay for expensive books so I usually get them from the library. The most famous library I have been to is the NYC city library since I grew up in New York.
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
I love Livira and her curiosity. She doesn't accept things as they are and always wants to know "why" or "how". Some one who wants more from life and seeks to get it.
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
I suppose they are trying to be some sort of 'foreshadowing' but I find them confusing or too cryptic at this point.
I don't think the author has done a good job of helping me picture the Library or what is does or what happened. I can't even see it as an entity yet but rather just a place. Too much information is being tossed at us with little context. Just trying to sort out who is who at this point.
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
Obviously it was not written by anyone in his family and it certainly will have an impact on the story. I am hoping that it begins to explain exactly what is going on in this side of the plot. Right now its purpose is just to peak your interest..
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-7District 2
1. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
Oh yes, I love libraries, but it's been a while since I've been to one. I live in NY and have visited the NY Public Library many times as well as The Morgan Library where I got to see original manuscripts for Alice in Wonderland and some of Edgar Allen Poe's original works.
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
She's strong-willed and a ferocious little fighter. It's clear she's not meant for life in the dust. She is open to change more so than the other characters from the dust land and will welcome the change even if it is under terrible circumstances.
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
I also find them confusing and cryptic!
I agree and also don't think the writer is giving us enough context as to how the library fits into the world and its purpose. I find myself having to pause just to wrap my head around what it is or isn't.
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
I was thinking perhaps Evar wrote this to himself when he was in the Mechanism? The book gives Evar something of his own to figure out and embrace. This will be his focus and his treasure.
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-71. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
We go every couple of weeks or so as I have a little boy and am in a book club there too.
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
Seems like a make your own fortune type of girl not waiting for opportunities to come to her!!
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
Cryptic at this stage not sure if it connects or is just to add some mystery to the tone of the story.
Lots of detail can see how its similar to the book cover. Seems omnipotent but time will tell.
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
Oooh maybe its a make your own adventure tale story but were reading it and not deciding. Sounds like its alive, maybe someone is trapped.
DAY 1 CHAPTERS 1-71. Ahhh.. The Library! ..My happy place. And what a beautifully intriguing cover! How often do you visit your local library and have you visited any famous libraries around the world. Do share!
I visited my local branch in person for the first time in over a year to pick up my hold for this book! I have gotten so used to the Libby app that I have been neglecting paper books from my library. The only famous library I can think of is the Library of Congress which is so cool! I loved it.
2. The first chapters describe a barren wasteland with an equally hopeless type of existence for Livira and her people. But straight away we establish that there is something special about Livira as she rises above her surroundings and the life she seems destined for. But circumstances change... your first impressions of Livira and how she influences her new destiny.
So far I prefer Livira's perspective to Evar's. I love her tenacity and curiosity about the world. I assume that adventurous spirit will come in handy for the plot. I especially loved how she took charge of the allotment situation and I am so so excited to see what happems in the library!
3. The chapter headings.. how do they fit into the tale? Do you find them interesting as a guide or somewhat cryptic at this stage of the story?
I like the snippets of old texts. They add to the world building for me and give just a touch of history. I do wonder if there is any rhyme or reason to them because they don't seem very related to the chapter contents. I am also super intrigued by the two sentence prologue!
Not gonna lie, I had to read this several times and I'm still not sure I get it haha. I am having a hard time following the disappearing kids and how old they are now and how and when they go in and out of the mechanism. The library itself feels to me like a cross between Incarceron and The Starless Sea, both of which I loved so that's promising!
5. "Evar, don't turn the page. I'm in The Exchange. Find me at the Bottom" .
Who wrote this sentence and what is its purpose at this point in the novel? What impact do you think it will have in the story moving forward?
I keep thinking it might be Livira from the future or maybe there is a gap in the two timelines. I think the two of them finding each other is going to set up something big.

A boy has lived his whole life trapped within a vast library, older than empires and larger than cities.
A girl has spent hers in a tiny settlement out on the Dust where nightmares stalk and no one goes.
The world has never even noticed them. That's about to change.
Their stories spiral around each other, across worlds and time. This is a tale of truth and lies and hearts, and the blurring of one into another. A journey on which knowledge erodes certainty, and on which, though the pen may be mightier than the sword, blood will be spilled and cities burned.
