The story starts with a fatal balloon accident. A group of people rush to help, and two of the men end up locked in a psychological stalker-type drama that keeps the reader in a state of tension and curiosity. Narrator Joe tells his version of what happened. The other man, Jed, appears mentally imbalanced and thinks Joe has fallen in love with him. He becomes obsessed with Joe, but as we go along, we start to wonder about Joe’s mental state. Joe may not be telling us everything. Joe and Jed have opposite views of the world. Joe is a successful science writer and atheist. Jed is a religious believer living an isolated life. The writing is stellar as usual with this author. The story is unsettling. It keeps the reader guessing until the end. McEwan has a knack for taking psychological issues and turning them into intense character-driven narratives (Saturday is another fine example). Do not skip the Appendices – they are an integral part of the story.
