Book Club+ MPC discussion

Hi everyone,

If you are joining us for "Mercury" by Amy Jo Burns, we are now at Chapter 12. Marley has just had her baby, Theodore Shay. Waylon and Marley were now adusting to having a new baby and Waylon balancing work with family responsibilities.

Chapter 12
Waylon was working hard for the slow time in winter and preparing for new jobs in spring. He wanted to keep everyone happy, but finding balance was not easy. He felt guilty for not being at home with Marley. Marley encouraged Waylon not to give up as Waylon was having trouble finding new business. Suddenly a hurricane came, with heavy rains. Marley hoped that this would bring new business for Waylon.

While she waited for new business, Shay stayed home from school and kept Marley company. The phone did ring and Marley was getting job requests. The Pastor called and asked for a job quote, but wanted Marley and not Mick to come to the church. He was not trusted by the church women. She hoped Elise would watch the baby, but she did not offer to. Instead, she told Marley to raise her own children. Elise not knowing this was a sales call for the family business.

Marley and Jade went to the church with the baby and Marley did the quote assessement the best she could. The ladies agreed on a price. They did tell Marley they wanted to speak with her and not Mick, because they knew the family needed the money. They did it for Elise, not Mick.

Marley asked Shay for help in learning how to patch a roof. They both went to the church to see if they could complete the job. While they were celebrating their patch job, Shay noticed something at by a pile of church robes. They saw a pair of shoes that looked like Elise's.

Marley decided to help the family with their roofing business. Business wasn't coming. When the hurricane came, calls came soon after. One call from the church specifically asked for Marley. Marley agreed to a roofing patch job for $500 dollars and a guarantee for more roofing. Shay and Marley discovered in the church attic, shoes that looked like Elise's .Are they Elise's shoes? What will Mick say when he finds out Marley made this deal? What will Waylon say? Will the Joseph family appreciate her effort or will they be offended?

What do you think? Is Marley over-stepping the Joseph territory? Or will they see how she has brought business to them?
